2. Programming First Program “Own the Night” at Club Libra-Ry

3. Activities and Games • “Disco Debbie” will introduce the program and go over the rules and requirements of the Summer Reading Program. • Have a display set up of prizes that the teens are able to win. • Have the room set up in a club atmosphere. Provide dim lighting and arrange seating groups for teens to sit and chat.

4. Activities and Games • Wii Karaoke and Dance Dance Revolution will be set up for the teens to use as they wish. • Monster Feet Dancing Teen take turns wearing large monster feet to dance in. You can vote on the best dancer to win a prize. • Board Games can be available for those teens that do not wish to participate in other activities.

5. Refreshments • Layered colored sport drinks with umbrella. (On the bottom of the glass I will add a “mouth” sticker so they look funny when drinking. Mark the front side of the cup with an X so the sticker will be right side up.) • Finger snacks such as pretzels, cheese curls, chips, and/or crackers.

7. Activities and GamesCheese Head Game • Prepare two volunteers by outfitting them with a shower cap and goggles. They will be the team captains. (This provides a lot of laughter as well.) • Cover the shower cap with shaving cream. Divide your group into two teams. Give each team a bag of cheese curls to try to stick to the shaving cream on the head of their team captain.

8. Cheese Head Game • Put down a line for the teams to throw behind. • Limit the number of cheese curls each player can throw. • This is run as a relay race. Get out of the way and have fun!

9. Program 2 of “Own the Night” Vampires, Monsters and Zombies, Oh My! • This program will be an optional costume party. A winner for best costume will be chosen and will receive a free movie ticket. • The Monster Mash song will be playing and the room will be decorated according to the theme.

10. Activities and GamesMummy Wrap • You will need to divide your group into two teams. • Each team will receive one giant roll of crepe paper. • One volunteer will be needed from each group to be the Mummy. • The object of the game is to see how much you can wrap around the person in the allotted time.

11. Activities and Games Mummy Wrap • You cannot wrap the crepe paper around the persons eyes, mouth or nose. • If the crepe paper is wound too tightly it will break. • The team left with the least amount of crepe paper left wins.

13. Activities and GamesZombie Eyeball Relay Race • Divide the group into two even teams. • Decorate two ping pong balls so they look like eyes. • Set up a racing lane for the two teams. To make it more interesting you add obstacles to go around when racing. • Provide each team with a spoon hold the “eyeball”. The first team to complete the relay wins.

14. Activities and GamesVampire Donut Shooting • Use the lid of a paper box to make an open mouth of a vampire. • Purchase a battery operated devise that shoots round foam discs. (These can be found at Meijers and other stores for around $10 each. Manufactured by Kids Only, Inc.) • See how many donuts (discs) they can shoot into the mouth of the vampire.

16. Activities and GamesMostly True Library Tale • Gather the group around you to present a ghostly tale. • Make sure the lights are dimmed and all is quiet to set the mood. • Read the following tale to your group or pick out one of your own. (Teenagers are not too old to enjoy stories!)

19. Refreshments • Have your teens make their own “Monster Sundae”. • Scoop out ice cream into bowls and provide plenty of different toppings to choose from. • You can usually have these items donated to your library by asking local grocery stores in your area.

20. Program 3 of “Own the Night”Knight Time • This program will focus on knights and damsels. • We are the Champions song will be playing and the room will be decorated according to the theme. • I will have the Wii Sports Resort game available for sword fighting.

Activities and GamesTreasure of the Realm • This game is a version of “Duck Duck Goose” designed for teens. • To prepare for this game, locate and ready a dozen or more small containers with lids. Make sure the containers are opaque. I used specimen cups with lids that a patron donated to us. I then spray painted them so you could not see through them.

22. Activities and Games“Treasure of the Realm” • Once the cups are readied, fill with a variety of items, including feathers, sequins, confetti and water! Be warned! This is a very messy but fun game! I put down a tarp or old sheet before playing. • Let the teens know ahead of time they may get wet.

Activities and Games“Treasure of the Realm” • Have the kids sit in a circle and pick one person to be “it”. • This person will pick up one container, open it and go around the group, saying “treasure, treasure, etc.,” and when they get to the person they want, they say “realm” and dump the contents onto the person’s head.

24. Activities and Games“Treasure of the Realm” • After the laughter dies down, the person chosen is now “it”. • Continue the game until everyone is chosen.

25. Activities and Games“Decap Your Opponent” • This is a fight to the end! The end of wearing a hat or cap. • Provide an assortment of silly hats for the teens to wear. Make sure they fit loosely and on top of the head, not around. • Group them into pairs. • Each person will receive a balloon sword to “decap “ their opponent.

26. Make a Balloon Sword • This is a very simple balloon to make. Directions and pictures are on the next slide. • Long sculpting balloons and hand pumps may be purchased at a variety of locations including: Hobby Lobby, Krogers, Meijers, and Family Dollar. • The sculpting balloons are referred to as 260’s. • Using the pump, inflate the balloon until you have about an inch left at the end of the balloon.

27. Make a Balloon Sword • Before tying off the balloon, soften it by leaving a little of the air out. • If possible, buy Qualatex brand of balloons. They are very reliable and have very little breakage. If not available, any brand will work as it is a very simple figure with only two twist. • Keep balloons in a cool dry place until ready to use. A freezer or refrigerator works great!

29. Activities and Games“Jump the Moat” • Beg, borrow, or buy “sit and bounce” balls with handles that teens can use. • Secure a paper “moat” to the floor of your activity room for the teens to hop over. • They can see how many times they hop over the moat. You could also do this as a relay race.

30. Refreshments • On our last program, we always serve pizza and pop. Of course, we get these items donated! • While the teens are eating, we draw names for prizes. This way, we have no “down” time. • Thank the teens for participating and take pictures.

31. Large Incentive for Reading • Every year I offer a large incentive for the teens to read. • I set the incentive at 500 hours for the group. • We always go to downtown Metamora (just down the street) next to the local restaurant so we will draw a crowd. • This year the teens will roll me down the sidewalk in an inflatable ball I will fit inside of.

34. Decorations • Decorating your teen area can be done in a variety of ways including: Bulletin Boards Window Areas Seating Areas • Make sure the bulletin board in the teen area reflects the theme and concentrates on what your program is about.

35. Decorations • If you have any windows you can decorate, invite the local school art students to paint them according to your theme. • Any incentives for your programs should be included somehow in your displays. I show the progress they are making on the 500 hours.

36. Decorations • For our seating areas, we are draping dark blue tulle over the ceiling and putting tiny holiday white lights between the ceiling and the tulle. • You can include monsters, vampires, and/or knight cut-outs. The teens really enjoy it if you make a cardboard cut-out that they can insert their face into. This is a great photo op!

37. Decorations • We will decorating our community room in which we have the programs. • We leave most of the decorations up during the whole summer reading time span if we can. • We will be decorating the ceiling the same way as the in the teen area. • Get out your halloween decorations!
