Enlightenment Style Governments Democracy – Government where citizen have rights to elect officials to rule country (US Style) Presidential Democracy – Citizens elect Legislature and Executive branches (US Style) Parliamentary Democracy – Citizens elect legislature, Legislature elects Executive (Different) Constitutional Democracy – U.S. Form of Democracy. 3 branches equal in power (US Style) Representative Democracy -- U.S. Form of Democracy. 3 branches equal in power (US Style)

  3. Non Enlightened Oppressive Governments Monarchy – Inherited by Blood line or heir to throne. Royal Family. Absolute Monarchy– Dictator style monarch Constitutional Monarchy– The country has formed a Constitution which guarantees legal rights for citizens. Monarch is simply a figure head and must follow constitution.

  4. Non Enlightened Oppressive Governments Dictator – Ruler with absolute power, takes control of country by force, often military force. Theocracy – Type of Government that uses God or religious principles or religious leaders to operate government.

MUST KNOW AMENDEMENTS 1st Amendment- Free speech, Press, religion, Assembly, and to petition government 13th Amendment - Abolished slavery 14th Amendment - Born in America, you get citizenship, Would ensure Blacks and Women the right to vote. 18th Amendment - Prohibition - No Alcohol. Federal government took power from the states 19th Amendment - Women rights to vote 26th Amendment - 18 year olds can vote

  6. Supreme Court Rulings Plessey vs. Ferguson - 1898 Supreme Court ruling stated: Separate but equal was equal. Used by Southern states to justify Jim Crow laws like white schools separate from black schools. Brown vs. Board of Education - 1950’s Supreme Court ruling that overturned the Plessey vs. Ferguson ruling. Brown Stated: Separate but equal is inherently unequal. This case lead directly to de-segregation of all public schools in America.
