  1. Yerevan Institute “Plastpolymer”today and tomorrow Zoya Farmazyan ISTC Project Manager

  2. HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE • CJSC Yerevan SRI “Plastpolymer” was founded in 1958. • The essential course of scientific activity has been synthesis of vinylacetate (VA) and polymers on its basis. • Work in this field allowed to organize over 20 large-capacity productions of VA and PVA plastics. • The institute in the former USSR exercised scientific-technical control over more than 20 large chemical complexes, as well as kept close contacts with over 35 scientific research enterprises. Institute includes Scientific-Research and Industry Departments

  3. Scientific-Research Activities Synthesis of copolymers of VA with unsaturated carbonic acids Synthesis of poly (vinylalcohol) and its modified forms Synthesis of PVA, double and ternary copolymers on the basis of VA in the form of dispersions, suspensions and laquers Synthesis of high molecular weight PVA with low branching and narrow molecular weight Technological processes of obtaining vinyl esters and carriers and effective catalysts for them. CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE

  4. CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF THE INSTITUTE • The Industry Department consists of the Pilot Plant and Industry Plant • The Pilot Plant is unique because : • allows refinement of the technological parameters, i.e. is an interface between laboratory and industrial technologies; • represents the technological lines with processing volumes from 60 liter up to 200 liter; • is useful for production of experimental batches of PVAD differ trademark, of PVAc and MPVAc differ trademark from 20 kg up to 100 kg • The Industry Plant has a productive capacity for PVAD up to 600 t/year and for PVAc 80-100 t/year

  5. PRESENTATION OF TECHNOLOGIES • Synthesis of copolymers of VA with UCA; homo- and copolymers (double and ternary) on the basis of VA; modified poly (vinylalcohol) as well as high molecular weight PVA ModifiedPoly(vinylalcohol) Using of MPVAc instead of PVAc in aqueous glues for wood allow: to markedly enhance gluing ability simultaneously to simplify their composition New series of water-soluble and water- diluted VA-acrylic acid copolymers as emulsions and as solutions. The advantages over known PVAD is simplified manufacturing These products can be used for thickeners, new composites, glues, plant protection means, etc

  6. APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGIES • The polymer materials on VA basis have various applications owing to large mark assortment. The institute disposes “KNOW-HOW” over 10 marks of PVA dispersions, over 7 marks of polyvinyl alcohol , differing by molecular weight, content of residual acetate groups and natrium acetate • Their use as glues and binding agents predominate in polygraphs, textile, furniture, varnish and paint industry, also used in such specific fields as medicine, every day chemistry, and food industry

  7. APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGIES • New types of carriers on the basis of local mineral raw materials and high effective catalysts on their basis, can be used for processes of gas phase synthesis from olefines of vinyl and allyl monomers • Copolymers on the basis of cloroprene used as the main component for obtaining rubbers and elastomers with increased stability to  radiation.

  8. LIST OF COOPERATION PARTNERS IN CIS AND ABROAD • Scientific Centers in Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan; • Virginia Commonwealth University, USA • Universitet of Antwerp, Belgium • Institute de Chimie, Orlean, France • “Clarient” firm, Germany • IAB Ingenieur und Anlagenbau GmBH, Germany • Dow Chem. Company, USA • Uneco Inc., USA

  9. COOPERATION WE ARE LOOKING FOR • Two preferable forms of cooperation in the field of thorough investigations and scientific-technical (ST) programs should refer: 1. On non commercial basis 2. On commercial basis : • Transmission of ST knowledge and technologies on license principles. • Conducting joint investigations. • Implementation of contractual research. • ST cooperation within the limits of joint enterprises, or temporary ST teams and laboratories.
