Fraunhofer IPM, organization background • First space activities in 1954 in the ionospheric institute and follow up institute for space research in Freiburg, Institute for Physical Space Research (IPW.) • Since 1973 it is named Fraunhofer Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques (IPM) The R&D activities include the development of components, processes and systems. Basis of these is the expertise in measurement systems, optical techniques and thin film technology to be applied in industry, in research and in space. • The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FHG) itself was founded in Munich in 1949 as a non-profit registered association. It is an autonomous organization with a decentralized organizational structure throughout Germany (60 research institutes). The administrative headquarters are in Munich. • The IPW was headed by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Karl Rawer who is one of the German pioneers in space research. Since 1957 EUV spectroscopy for space applications is one of the topics to complement the ionospheric research. Based on more than 40 scientific rocket launches and participation in more than 9 satellite missions IPW/IPM received broad international recognition.
Current Projects, related to AFFECTS The latest project is the SolACES experiment aboard the International Space Station ISS. A low-cost EUV and Plasma Spectrometer (SEPS) is under development founded by ESA/DLR. SolACES Solar Auto-Calibration EUV/UV Spectrometer (DLR, EADS/ESA) SEPS Spherical EUV and Plasma Spectrometer(DLR, EADS, ESA) SSA / SN-IISN-II Space Weather Instruments activities, which form part of the (Astrium, ESA) Agency’s overall Space Situational Awareness (“SSA”) Preparatory Programme Investigation (Phase 1) Design Study (Phase 2)
SolACES SOLAR 1-SOLSPEC instrument for solar observations between 180 and 3000 nm with high spectral resolution 2-SOL-ACESmeasures the EUV/UV spectral regime (17 nm -220 nm) with moderate spectral resolution. 3-SOVIM covers near UV, visible and thermal regimes (200 nm – 100 µm)
SolACES Mission Characteristics: Instrument launched in February 2008 Launcher: Space Shuttle STS 122 (NASA) Nominal / potential mission duration: 18 / 36 months mission extension: + 22 months until End 2013 Orbit characteristics: ISS orbit (altitude < 400 km) Observation schedule: max. 20 minutes per orbit SolACES Proto Flight Model Associated Partners: Kiepenheuer Institute for Solar Physics, Freiburg (Germany) Institute for Meteorology, University of Leipzig (Germany) DLR / DFD, Neustrelitz (Germany) Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP),Boulder, CO (USA) Space Environment Technologies, Los Angeles, CA (USA) Service d’aeronomie, Verrières-le-Buisson (France) Phys.-Meteorologisches Obs. Davos / World Radiation Center (PMOD / WRC), Davos (Switzerland) SolACES instrument withsubunits (size: 25 x 29 x 60 cm3)

Primary Applications of SEPS SEPS shall become a new development of a space weather sensor to monitor the following parameters: • solar wind • terrestrial plasma (ionosphere through magnetosphere) • suprathermal electron fluxes up to 100 eV (up to 200 keV with LEED)* • solar EUV radiation Measurement of solar EUV radiation and plasma environment during >10 years: • densities of ions and electrons: 1 cm-3 – 106 cm-3 • total solar EUV flux: absolute accuracy of 10 % and variability <1 % • one sample of all parameters: every 10 s • SEPS shall be able to operate at spacecraft potentials from -50 V - +50 V *The energy range can be extended up to 5 - 200 keV by integration of an additional striped silicon detector called LEED from Paul Scherer Institute in Switzerland. Energy range can be extended by 1 keV – 200 keV by integration of the suprathermal electron flux monitor (LEED from Paul-Scherer-Institute / CH) SEPS LEED E-Box
Primary Tasks for AFFECTS Tasks ofFHG / EADS: • Evaluation of the SolACES/SOLAR data to provide daily EUV spectra in cooperation with SOLSPEC and the Boulder group, TIMED mission, USA • Develop the empirical-mathematical tools for derivation of the EUV spectra from the current recordings of SEPS • a) Development of the SEPS electrical field model (SEPS-EFM) by EADS with the simulation tool SPIS (ESA) for space plasma environments. b) Verification of the EFM by data correlation and test measurements in the laboratory by FHG • Preparing and performing procedures for cross-calibration of SEPS – SolACES (if there is an mission overlap foreseeable) • Analysis of the activity of the SEPS plasma data and evaluation of SEPS EUV data with high cadence for space weather aspects
