10. Theory 1: Functionalism • Emphasizes the contributions made by each part of society (ex. Family, religion, economics) • Everyone in society has a function in which they seek to fulfill • Societies tend to turn towards a state of stability

Theory 3: Symbolic Interactionism • SYMBOL: anything that stands for something else and has an agreed-upon meaning. • We learn the meaning of symbols by watching others • We use learned meanings to help us imagine how others are going to respond to the same symbol and base our actions accordingly • Our behavior is influenced by the meanings of symbols (attract or avoid certain symbols)

17. Sociological Perspective • FUNCTIONALISM • “Outlawing Too Skinny” • This article is about how Israel is dealing with the issue of eating disorders in their country. Their government passed a law banning the use of stick thin models on runways and ads. The government hopes this law will change attitudes about beauty in their country. Advertising companies will now have to think twice about what image they are selling. • I think this is an interesting idea as a way to combat eating disorders. I wonder if a law like this would ever get passed in the United States. I think many would feel it’s not the government’s function to institute such a law.
