  3. Phrasing or “chunking” • Read groups of words together before pausing • Pause at periods • Pause at commas • Using finger to swoop under groups of words

Phrasing Example Mrs. Gorf had a long tongue/ and pointed ears./ She was the meanest teacher/ in Wayside School./ She taught the class/ on the 30th floor. / “If you children are bad,”/ she warned, / “or if you answer a problem wrong,/“I’ll wiggle my ears,/ stick out my tongue/ and turn you into apples!”/ Mrs. Gorf didn’t like children,/ but she lovedapples./ 60

Punctuation • Comma (,) – pause • Period (.) – come to a full stop (maybe take a breath) • Question Mark (?) – usually your voice goes up at the end of a question • Exclamation Mark(!) – use an excited or surprised voice • Ellipsis (…) – pause • Dash (-) – to interrupt or come to a quick stop • Quotation Marks (“”) – do nothing

  12. REMEMBER • Read like you talk! • Chunk words in a sentence—do NOT be a robot reader! • Pay attention to punctuation! • Use good expression so the reader can HEAR the meaning of the words!
