WHAT IS AN INTEGER? Integers- the set of whole numbers and their opposites (…,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,…) Opposites- the opposite of a number is found by going the same distance from zero on a number line, but in the opposite direction - basically, you just have to change the sign to its opposite
WHAT IS AN INTEGER? Find the opposite of the following: 9___ -11___ -56___ 32 ___ Since the whole numbers are 0,1,2,3,… and the integers are described as the whole numbers and their opposites, then the integers are: …,-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3,…
ARE THESE INTEGERS? YES OR NO? Integers or Not: -23 ___ 99 ___ -43___ 22.5 ___ -12.9___
ABSOLUTE VALUE • Absolute Value- the absolute value of a number is the number’s distance from zero on a number line - symbol When you see this, it is asking for the absolute value of the number inside…12 in this case In other words…how many units away from zero is 12 on a number line?
ABSOLUTE VALUE Since the absolute value is asking you about distance, will it ever be negative? Can you have a negative distance? Find the following:
DON’T GET ‘EM CONFUSED! • Absolute Value and Opposites are often confused • Remember….for Opposites, you change it to the opposite sign. For Absolute Value, you just make the number positive • Try to keep them straight!
