We need to plan for a 90-minute meeting… We need a catchy title for our meeting… With 3 segments… We need 3 overarching themes (1 for each segment) as well as questions for the panelists within those themes…
Macro Structures 1. Past, present, future 2. Descriptive, evaluative, suggestive 3. Individual, State, together 4. Industry/Commerce, Government/Policy, Education/Curriculum • Issues we’ve discussed: • PW’rs role in the economy (broadly) and in Michigan (specifically) • Michigan: A place for the creative class? • Retaining graduates/PW in Michigan • Michigan’s transforming economy • Michigan’s ability to attract employers and employees of the creative class
Possible Town Hall Titles: • Writing Michigan’s Future • Write Here, Write Now • Possible Topics: Town Hall Segments • Cool Cities? How is Michigan Fostering the Creative Class Economy? Alt: Where are the Creative Class finding success in Michigan? • Writing Michigan’s Future: What Can PW Offer? • 3. Jobs for Tomorrow? Will Michigan’s Economic Transformation Be Good for Professional Writers? Alt: What kinds of Opportunities exist for Professional Writers?
Possible Topics: Town Hall Segments 3. Transforming Economies: Where do Writers Fit? 4. Is “Writing” Still Relevant? If I say “I’m a professional writer” what do you think I do? Or…PW: “How do you manage to convey your expertise, value in today’s economy?” 5. What do Writers Actually do in ___________ (government, industry, non-profits)? 6. Are we being adequately prepared for a career in PW? In 2010? Michigan? (panelists would include PW faculty…)
Possible Topics: Town Hall Segments 7. How does a PW degree translate into a job? What are probable career trajectories for PW majors? 8. Making it on your own: How to start your own business in PW or be entrepreneurial in your workplace (contract-based work, etc.) 9. How important is technology? How has it changed the PW landscape? (PW’er who works with a digital publication; tech company reps; veterans who were around before digital publishing or the web; PW faculty members)
Possible Topics: Town Hall Segments 202 Section 1—Sue’s Class Policy Makers:What do you see for the future of Michigan?What do you plan to do for MI?How do you plan to diversify our economy? What do you see as our contribution / how can we make this happen (see below for one example) Michigan Cool Cities: What is a way that as writers we can help to contribute to the Cool Cities Cooperative? How can we (future PWers) help encourage growth in an environment that is enjoyable and makes folks want to stay?
Possible Topics: Town Hall Segments 202 Section 1—Sue’s Class Faculty: Where do you see us working?What kinds of jobs do you see us holding? Because it’s so new, do we have to create these kinds of jobs for ourselves? Do we have to carve out our own niche? How do we go about doing that? (Florida)
