Site Rating • We both gave it 4 stars because it was a good but not great internship. We learned a lot and met a lot of great people in the industry but there was a lot of downtime whenever we were not preparing for an event. The staff at the CVB were very easy to get along with and were always willing to help when we had questions.
Words of Wisdom • Don’t be afraid to take initiative in your work. Be confident in your abilities and believe that what you bring to the table is worth something. Always work hard even when you would like to take the day off and try to meet and talk to as many people as possible.
Internship Objectives - Adam • To learn the aspects of managing an event effectively. • Learn the process of attracting events to the Bryan-College Station area • To improve in all aspects of an employee to be a more marketable professional
Internship Objectives - Brent • To use this internship as an opportunity to network and meet other industry professionals • To gain knowledge about the process of planning and organizing sporting events • To improve my leadership skills through being a site supervisor for various events • To become familiar with the process of soliciting an event to Bryan-College Station
Daily Activities - Adam • When I get to the office in the morning the first thing I do is check my email. If I have any unread emails I try to respond to them then. After that I start my work for the day. I take lunch at 12:00 and once I return I start back to work. In the afternoon if I have downtime I will ask if anyone needs help with stuff they’re doing. At 4:30 I head home only to return the next day to repeat this.
Daily Activities – Brent • Day to day activities varied depending on if we had a major event coming up • Arrive at the office at 8 a.m. where I would check emails and voicemails. • Around 8:30 I would begin working on my project/assignment that my supervisor had assigned to me. • Periodically throughout the day I would leave the office to run errands • If I finished my work before the end of the day, I would ask other people if they needed help with their work. • Leave around 4:30 p.m.
Project Description – Adam • My project was the 7-on-7 tournament. I managed the hospitality events that happened at night during the tournament. I was in charge of contacting the venue to book the location, meeting with the venue for prices and also choosing food to be served.
Project Description – Brent • My project was the Great American Shootout. My tasks for this project included the following: • Contacting local restaurants and businesses to inquire about sponsorship opportunities and following up with those that were interested. • Finding the best deal for t-shirts and wristbands that were to be ordered for the tournament • Buying snacks and drinks for the hospitality rooms at all the gyms, while staying within a specified budget.
