  5. Why is it Important to Identify Leaders? • Leaders are in your workplace ~ they are anyone with willing followers. • They influence others. • Asset vs. Liability • Good leaders don’t just convince, they convert.

Identify and Cultivate Safety Leaders • How do I Identify and Cultivate Safety Leaders: Safety Leaders must have a commitment to Safety and believe that we can achieve our goal of ‘0’ occurrences • What do I look for as a Manager? Safety leaders demonstrate excellence in Safety by keeping themselves, others and company property safe. They set the standard for Safety and Professionalism • Select the right people: Willingness to participate in Safety process (Safety process includes keeping work area/facility and equipment clean) Demonstrates Safety Stewardship-owns decisions and helps strengthen other team members, customer and company • Look for individuals that have leadership/management potential • Integrity- act with honesty & fairness because nothing else matters • Mentors a positive reinforcement of Safety. Understands Critical Behavior is Urgently important to safety success & (finding fault is a distraction)

Major Objective of Lead Safety Specialists • Has potential to lead other Safety Specialists and front line employees in promoting Safety behavior • LSS are assigned the responsibility of heading up the Safety Specialist program with support from manager at operation • Safety success depends on the personal goals of individuals on our team including written goals(example: signed Safety Commitment card) • Number of currently serving SS’s & LSS’s varies depending on needs and could included everyone • Safety success is results – 0 occurrences • The key ingredient to Safety success is Safety behavior • LSS/SS are assigned specific areas of responsibility • Safety Inspection -Cleanliness Inspection – Observations - SHAPS • Other – PPE, Safety training, MSDS updates and review…..

Attributes that I look for in selecting LSS/SS • A Passion for Safety (be creative in using positive reinforcement – spaced repetition) Critical Behavior is Urgently important • Positive attitude toward company and management • Has a professional appearance and attitude • Sets the example of what our customers expect our employees to be • Treats co-workers with dignity and respect • Is able to anticipate and solve problems • Acceptspersonal responsibility and has ownership for their actions at all times. Has good understanding that Safety behavior precedes Safety results and Positive reinforcement gets desired Safety behavior

  11. Safety Leadership really is about personal responsibility and positive reinforcement of Safe behavior. How safe are you when no one else is looking? Ask yourself: Why am I Safe? Can I do one more thing for Safety?
