Identity theft: What is it? “It’s when a criminal obtains enough personal information to impersonate you.”-p.41 We think of identity theft, when someone gets ahold of your credit card or steal mail from your trash and impersonate you. This also happens on the computer, where now a days people purchase things on the internet, check their bank accounts and also a identity thief can just steal your information on Facebook or any social networking site, if your account is unsecured. According to FTC has estimated that 9 million Americans are victims of identity theft each year.
How can you detect identity thieves through the computer • Monitor your account balances and your activity on your debit or credit card weekly. • This way you can catch the thief that is stealing your information as early as possible • Use e-mail-based account "alerts" to monitor transfers, payments, low balances and withdrawals. • This way your bank will probably send you e-mails or notifications if your credit has been drop to a low score
How can you detect identity theft on your computer • Enable your computer’s firewall if it’s not turned on. • This way your firewall will help you prevent unauthorized access to your computer from remotely locating identity thieves or computer hackers. • A computer hacker or identity thief who is determined any means to subvert your existing firewall, to cause harm to your files on your computer • View windows firewall notification messages and note the web address indicated for remote access attempts on your computer
How to detect identity theft on your computer • Check if your online banking accounts and see if you note any unauthorized purchases or activity. • This is an indication that a identity thief has gained access to your online financial resources • Make sure you changed your passwords after conducting a full spyware and virus scan on your computer

Preventing identity thieves from stealing information from your computer and your personal information • Computer: • Install a firewall on your home computer from accessing your personal information from your hardware. • Install and update virus protection software • Protect your files and secure it and create difficult passwords so no thieves or hacker can invade it. • Computer: • Never respond to phishing e-mails. • When shopping online, only give your credit card information to companies with strong security protection
Preventing identity thieves from stealing your information in your everyday life and your computer? • Always review your credit card statements and always keep an eye on your credit report. • In everyday life: • Shred any evidence of all private records and statements • Never carry your social security card on you • Never leave ATM, credit cards or gas receipts behind
Think Before you type and click: So, think before you put all your personal information on the computer, such as your full name, address, social security card or birthday. Have a “critical eye” check if the website that you are doing your online shopping if it’s legit. Remember, there are identity thieves waiting to grab ahold of your information. By having a “critical eye” this way you can prevent an identity thief from stealing any of your information and impersonating you.
