Troubleshooting Principles and Methods • The troubleshooting process should conform to the following principles: • From outside to inside During system troubleshooting, first troubleshoot external devices, including cables and customer's devices, and whether any device is powered off. • Analyzing common alarms first and then special ones To deal with alarms, first analyze whether the alarms reflect a common problem or a special problem, thus determining the scope of influence. You also need to determine whether the problem is specific to one module or common to multiple modules. • Alarm analysis • When a system fails, generally, a great number of alarms are generated. By viewing such alarms and analyzing performance data, you can roughly determine the type and location of the fault. • Replacement method • This is a method with which the engineer replaces a part that may work improperly with a good one for the purpose of locating and rectifying the fault. Hardware Monitoring Background • Overview • Provides capability to monitor hardware components of each physical node in the PureDisk appliance. • This way provides a consistent user interface to monitor appliance software and hardware. • Requirements • Systems • NetBackup 5000 appliance • Software Version--NetBackup 5000 version 6.6.0.2 • Dependencies • Uses IMPI Tool from Huasy to get hardware component details • License • Appliance is factory installed with a demo license • Need to have license to install agent and capacity license to use all the features • Hardware Monitoring available within the GUI itself NBU 5000 Appliance TOI
Significance of Hardware Monitoring Feature • Why is this feature important to customers • View details of physical nodes that form the NBU 5000 appliance. • View details of hardware component configured on a particular physical host. • View hardware alerts raised on a particular node. • Clear hardware alerts. • Why is this feature important to Symantec • Introduces new feature of hardware monitoring for the first time in PureDisk • Provides single user interface to monitor hardware and software NBU 5000 Appliance TOI
Hardware Monitoring Details • View details of physical nodes that constitute an appliance • View details of following hardware components for each node: • CPU • Fan • Disk • RAID • Power Supply • View list of hardware alerts raised • Delete all hardware alerts • View miscellaneous hardware details NBU 5000 Appliance TOI
Basic Troubleshooting • How to troubleshoot a failed install • A failed install will not display Monitor > system tab in GUI • A failed install will not have HWMonitor tool installed. The tool gets installed in following folders: • /opt/pdappliance/bin/pdhwmon • /opt/pdappliance/script/pdhwmon.sh • Logging • HWMonitor tool logs are at: /Storage/log/pdhwmon.log • GUI logs are at: /Storage/log/guilogs NBU 5000 Appliance TOI
Background—Restricted Shell • Restrict User to special set of commands • Multi-Layered commands, more clear and secure • Auto-completion and context help of commands make it ease to use NBU 5000 Appliance TOI
