What is a computer? • An electronic device that receives data, processes data, stores data, and produces a result (output)
Types of Personal Computers • Desktop computer: designed to be used on a desktop • Laptop computer: portable computer designed to be small enough and light enough to be used on your lap • Tablet computer: portable computer primarily operated by touching the screen rather than using a physical keyboard
Computer Components: Hardware Hardware – the physical equipment of the computer system that you can see and touch
Monitor Computer Case (Processor inside) Floppy Disk Drive Keyboard Speakers CD ROM Drive Mouse USB Drive
Input Devices • Used to put information into the computer • Allow you to communicate with your computer Webcam Mouse Keyboard Microphone Joystick Scanner
Output Devices Speakers • Send information out of the computer • Allow the computer to communicate with the user Monitor – produces soft copy output Projector Printer – produces hard copy output Headphones
