A Tour of the Cell Intro: Sections 4.1-4.3
An Introduction to the Cell • Art and Science (pgs 50-51) • Microbiologists • Leeuwenhoek = “animalcules” • Hooke = “cells” • Cell Theory • All living things are made up of cells and come from cells
Microscopes • Resolution: • ability to show two close objects as separate • Human eye can’t resolve things smaller than 1/10 mm • Light Microscope: • Can see things 1,000 times larger than the “naked” eye • Labeling • Electron Microscope: • magnifies up to 100,000 times • must be used in a vacuum, non living • SEM- surface • TEM-through a specimen
Surface Area to Volume Ratio • The smaller the cell, the larger its SA:V ratio • As the cell grows larger, it has much less surface area than volume making it more difficult to absorb nutrients and dispose of wastes. Ex: CR North and South
Prokaryote • 1/10 – 1/1000 the size of eukaryotes • nucleoid region • Special structures
Plant and Animal Cellular Structure • Sections 4.4-4.19 • Group project • Labeling • Labs • TEST next Friday March 11th
