  1. Protists

  2. Protists A one- or many-celled organism that lives in moist or wet surroundings. Protists are eukaryotic organisms.

  3. Protist are divided into 3 groups: • Fungus-like: • Consumers; Most are saprophytes or parasites • Reproduce using spores, like fungi • Animal-like: • Consumers; obtain food in many ways • Like animals, most do not have cell walls • Most can move from place to place using cilia, flagella or pseudopods. • Plant-like: • Producers that contain chlorophyll • Many have cell walls like plants • Many-celled forms remain attached to surfaces with rootlike structures

  4. Ameoba • Have no definite shape • Move by using pseudopods • Swallows food up with pseudopods • Food is broken down in the food vacuole • Wastes are excreted through cell membrane; excess water is pumped out by a contractile vacuole • Respiration occurs when oxygen enters and carbon dioxide leaves through the cell membrane • Moves toward food but away from unfavorable conditions such as bright light and dryness • Reproduces through binary fission, asexual

  5. Paramecium • Slipper shaped • Use cilia to move • Food is swept into oral grove by cilia, then into gullet • Food is broken down in vacuole • Waste are excreted through anal pore; excess water is pumped out by the contractile vacuole • Respiration occurs when oxygen enters and carbon dioxide leaves through the cell membrane • Will move toward food but away from bright light and dryness, moves backwards when it bumps into an object • It reproduces through binary fission and conjugation.

  6. Euglena • Oval shaped • Moves using its flagella • Makes food in chloroplasts or food enters through the cell membrane • Food is broken down by enzymes in the cytoplasm • Wastes are excreted through cell membrane; excess water is pumped out by a contractile vacuole • Respiration occurs when oxygen enters and carbon dioxide leaves through the cell membrane • Moves toward areas of bright light • It reproduces through binary fission
