  2. Brief History of Hip-Hip • Started in the 1970s in the Bronx, NY • Gained millions of new fans across America through television shows and Hollywood movies • The first ever rap tune to be pressed on vinyl was “Rapper’s Delight”, by the Sugarhill Gang in the late 70s

  3. Brief History- cont’d • Some of the first hip-hoppers include:- Afrika Bambaataa- Run-DMC- Furious Five- Kurtis Blow- Grand Master Flash- Kool DJ Herc- KRS1

  4. Hip-Hop-Today Kanye West 50 Cent Freeway • Some of today’s Hip-Hop artists include: Beanie Sigel Cassidy David Banner

The Upside- Diddy • “Diddy Runs the City”- show awareness of the health and educational needs that face the children in New York. • Raised $1,000,000 for children’s charities:- Children Hope Foundation- Daddy’s House Special Program- New York City’s Public Schools • “VOTE OR DIE” Campaign • Has fashion line- Sean John

The Upside- Russell Simmons • Founder of Def Jam Records • Brought black hip-hop culture into the American mainstream • Played large role in producing the Philadelphia “Live 8” concert • President of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation- brings arts education to inner city kids • Has fashion line- Phat Farm

  7. The Upside- Akon • Gave away clothing to kids in Dakar • Youth Ambassador for Senegal • Put on free concert for the people of Senegal
