The Makings of the Television • Late 1800’s Paul Gottlieb Nipkow created first mechanical module television • 1907 Campbell-Swinton and Borris Rosing both, separately, used the cathode ray tube and the mechanical scanner system to create a new television system • 1923 Charles Jenkins used Nipkow’s disc idea to create first practical mechanical television
1927-1948 • 1927 Philo Taylor Farnsworth created first working electrical television • 1928 Charles Jenkins received first television license • 1930 Charles Jenkins aired first television commercial • 1945-1948 Commercial television stations grew from 9 to 48 • 1945-1948 Cities with commercial television service grew from 8-23 • 1945-1948 Television sales increased 500%
1949-1966 • 1957 Robert Adler created the first practical/wireless television remote • 1962 First transatlantic reception of a television signal via TELSTAR satellite • The TELSTAR satellite was the product a multi-national agreement between AT&T, Bell Labs, NASA, the British Post Office, and the French National Post Office • The agreement was to develop, launch and mobilize two telecommunication satellites
1967-1995 • 1967 Most programming was in color • 1972 Color televisions were in ½ of U.S. households • 1975 Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier fight was broadcast live to those who paid for paper view • Transatlantic broadcasts changed the understanding and relationship America with the world
1967-1995 (Continued) • 1967 First VCR created by Sony, priced at $1,295 • 1985 VCR/VHS format widely popular • 1994 99% of U.S. households had at least one television • 1994 HDTV was established
Television Today • Three types of televisions today Plasma, LCD and LED • Plasma the old/original version of television • LCD is the new, LED is a newer version of LCD • Plasma is currently the best • LCD has made many major advancements, but has not caught up to plasma • LED much more expensive and not very good, but will be as thin as a credit card in the future • Plasma proven more resilient when bigger
