General Tadeusz Kościuszko 1746 - 1817 Hero of Poland and America • In 1776 was commissioned as Colonel of Engineers and performed outstanding service of fortifying battle sites, • Admired the Declaration of Independence and became one of the best friends of Thomas Jefferson, • In 1783was appointed Brigadier General and awarded the Cincinnati Order Medal by George Washington, • Returned to Poland to help defend independence and the Constitution, • In 1794 was made theCommander-in-Chief of all Polish forces fighting against the Russians,after initial successes was wounded and taken prisoner, • Upon release from prison returned to America in 1797, his "second home", received a hero's welcome when he reached Philadelphia • Died in Switzerland in 1817 and was buried in Wawel Castle among the tombs of the Polish Kings...
