What type of government was set up? • The Constitution of 1791 set up a Constitutional Monarchy, replacing the old absolute monarchy. • The American Declaration of Independence served ads the model for the French constitution. • The constitution also abolished the old feudal system too.
Government (cont.) • The British and American idea of separation of powers was adding to the French government. • The King would still be the leader, but his power would be greatly decreased.
What powers did the legislative assembly have? • The new legislative body would ultimately have the power to make laws. • The legislative branch was the most powerful. • The King and his officials would be the executive and judicial branch.
How did the Constitution of 1791 make the government more efficient • The Constitution added the concept of the 83 “departments” of equal size. • They were made up of elected, salaried officials voted on by active citizens. • The Constitution formally set up a sovereign society where people rule instead a absolute ruler.
How did the moderate reformers view this? • The reformers thought the government should be more republican. • The Reformers also thought that the Constitution was the end of the revolution.
What was the kings reaction to the constitution of 1791 • The King’s wife Marie Antoinette had pressured him to flee the embarrassing situation. • The royal family disguised themselves as servants and where caught. • They were escorted back to France and no people wanted his head.
