New Survey or Existing one Since the country have alreadyexistingsurveyswhichcoversIncome, Health, Education, Employement, etc, itwasagreed to use existingsurveys Time frame : Over 2 to 3 years Focus : For the missing information : on nutrition a specific module to beadded to the existingsurvey as a module. 2. Purpose • Primarypurpose: To measurePoverty over time in order to thinkbeyondincome

  3. The secondarypurpose: Monitoring specific interventions. Why? • e.g: Monitor the implementation on Farmers/mordenisation of Agriculture or/Universalprimary/secondaryeducation 3. In order to clarify the criteriathat the indicators have: to Satisfy the needs of National Development Plan where the poverty/MDGs are the main strategic objective. 4. The processes: a quick expert-ledprocessfollowed by consultation within a participatoryapproach, with the Government leadership and involving all stakeholders.

  4. 5. The Weights: Equal weights 6. Dimensions of MPI: • Education: Year of schooling, Enrolment, Adult Literacy • Health: Nutrition, Child mortality • Living Standard: Cooking fuel, Sanitation (improved toilet facility) , Access to safe water, Electricity , The floor, Roof and wall, ownership of land Criteria influencing the choice of dimensions are the (i) equal weights importance and (ii) the availability of data.

  5. 7.Unit of analysis : Focus the survey on Household and not individual 8.The indicators chosed fit the purpose of the measure and accurate across regions (in the case of land which does’nt fit due to different land tenure systems in different regions). 9. Deprivation cutoffs Education: <11 Years , Adult literacy—not able to read and write, not enrolled

  6. 9: Health: stunted or malnourrished Standards of Living:Temporary housing materials,…. Ownership of land---none Other assets--- if they do not own 10. For each dimensions, different weights depending to the priority and importance. • The all weight should be 3 (Education & Health: 0,75 each and 1,5 for Standards of living) • We choose the weight (a) which reflects priority and importance.
