Presenter: Joshua Piano Rube GoldbergWeb Quest
Rube Goldberg Devices are usually built just for fun. When building one of these devices, there are many lessons to learn including those related to topics such as Newton’s laws, forces, energy, simple machines, etc. Following this web quest activity, a Rube Goldberg Device will be built for fun and we will apply what we have learned. Introduction
Learn what a Rube Goldberg Device is • Develop an understanding of: • Newton’s Laws • Concepts related to energy transfer • The six simple machines • Create a Rube Goldberg Device • Present the device to the class Tasks
Complete this web quest by using the resources on the following page to: • Identify Newton’s laws and explain the concepts with regard to forces in a short essay. • Explain how mechanical energy may be transferred in a short essay. • Identify the six simple machines and explain the concepts with regard to mechanical advantage in a short essay. Process 1
Construct a Rube Goldberg device • Use a design process to construct a Rube Goldberg Device • Present and demonstrate the device and how it works to the class. Be sure to explain how the simple machines are transferring energy and where Newton’s laws can be seen in the workings of the device. Process 2
What is a Rube Goldberg Device • Rube Goldberg - biography, general information, art work, art ideas. • YouTube - OK Go - This Too Shall Pass - Rube Goldberg Machine version - Official • Newton’s Laws • Newton's 3 Laws of Motion • Mechanical Energy • Kinetic and Potential Energy • YouTube - Potential and Kinetic Energy • Six Simple Machines • Simple Machines Resources
Each student will be given two grades • The first grade will be a holistic grade for the three essays generated during this web quest. Grading criteria on the rubric will include: • Identification of concepts • Explanation of concepts • Spelling & Grammar • The second grade will be based on the students presentation of the device. • Application of concepts • Quality of presentation • Explanation of concepts as they relate to the device • Performance of device Evaluation
Congratulations! You have completed the challenge. Constructing the Rube Goldberg Device was a great deal of fun and allowed us all to apply what we learned to achieve a better understanding of Newton’s Laws, energy transfer, and simple machines. I am confident that your completion of this web quest will give you a better understanding of the mechanical world around you. Conclusion
