  4. Opening sentence M: Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters, and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! (Isa 55:1a NRSV)

  5. PREPARATION M: In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen

  6. Opening Hymn We sing our opening hymn: Come to Calvary’s holy mountain, LHS 71 CAL293 James Montgomery (1771-1854)

  7. Come to Calvary’s holy mountain 1. Come to Calvary’s holy mountain, Sinners, ruined by the fall; Here a pure and healing fountain Flows to you, to me, to all, In a full perpetual tide, Opened when our Saviour died.

  8. Come to Calvary’s holy mountain 2. Come in poverty and meanness, Come defiled, without, within, From infection and uncleanness, From the leprosy of sin, Wash your robes and make them white; You shall walk with God in light.

  11. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: Friends in Christ: Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do.

  13. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: We have not loved you with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves. We deserve your eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

  14. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION C: Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

  15. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ, and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe, in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you. C: Amen.

  18. PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray for the bread of life. C: Thank you, compassionate God, that your Son healed the sick and fed those who were hungry. Satisfy our hunger both for daily bread and for the life-giving bread that lasts forever. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  19. FIRST READING R: The first Reading for the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 32 of Genesis, beginning at Verse 22. Genesis 32:22-31 Jacob wrestles with God CEV

  20. Genesis 32:22-31 22-23Jacob got up in the middle of the night and took his wives, his eleven children, and everything he owned across to the other side of the Jabbok River for safety. 24Afterwards, Jacob went back and spent the rest of the night alone.

  21. Genesis 32:22-31 A man came and fought with Jacob until just before daybreak. 25When the man saw that he could not win, he struck Jacob on the hip and threw it out of joint. 26They kept on wrestling until the man said, "Let go of me! It's almost daylight.”

  22. Genesis 32:22-31 "You can't go until you bless me," Jacob replied 27Then the man asked, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered.  28The man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob. You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won. That's why your name will be Israel.”

  23. Genesis 32:22-31 29Jacob said, "Now tell me your name." "Don't you know who I am?" he asked. And he blessed Jacob. 30Jacob said, "I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive." So he named the place Peniel.

  24. Genesis 32:22-31 31The sun was coming up as Jacob was leaving Peniel. He was limping because he had been struck on the hip.  This is the word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God. †

  25. Psalm 17:1-7,15CEV R: : The Psalm is PSALM 17 1I am innocent, LORD! C: Won't you listen as I pray and beg for help? I am honest! Please hear my prayer.

  26. Psalm 17:1-7,15CEV R: : 2Only you can say that I am innocent, because only your eyes can see the truth. C: 3You know my heart, and even during the night you have tested me and found me innocent.

  27. Psalm 17:1-7,15CEV R: : I have made up my mind never to tell a lie.   C: 4I don't do like others. R: : I obey your teachings and am not cruel.   5I have followed you, without ever stumbling.

  28. Psalm 17:1-7,15CEV C: 6I pray to you, God, because you will help me. Listen and answer my prayer!   R: : 7Show your wonderful love.

  29. Psalm 17:1-7,15CEV C: Your mighty arm protects those who run to youfor safety from their enemies.   C: Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

  30. Second reading R: The Second Reading is written in Chapter 9 of Romans, beginning at Verse 1. Romans 9:1-5 Paul's sorrow for his own people CEV

  31. Romans 9:1-5 I am a follower of Christ, and the Holy Spirit is a witness to my conscience. So I tell the truth and I am not lying when I say 2my heart is broken and I am in great sorrow. 3I would gladly be placed under God's curse and be separated from Christ for the good of my own people.  

  32. Romans 9:1-5 4They are the descendants of Israel, and they are also God's chosen people. God showed them his glory. He made agreements with them and gave them his Law. The temple is theirs and so are the promises that God made to them.  

  33. Romans 9:1-5 5They have those famous ancestors, who were also the ancestors of Jesus Christ. I pray that God, who rules over all, will be praised forever! Amen.  This is the Word of the Lord C: Thanks be to God.

  34. GOSPEL M: The Holy Gospel is written in Chapter fourteen of the Gospel according to St Matthew beginning at verse thirteen. Matthew 14:13-21 Jesus feeds the five thousand CEV

  35. M: 13After Jesus heard about John, he crossed Lake Galilee to go to some place where he could be alone. But the crowds found out and followed him on foot from the towns.

  36. 14When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw the large crowd. He felt sorry for them and healed everyone who was sick. 15That evening the disciples came to Jesus and said, "This place is like a desert, and it is already late. Let the crowds leave, so they can go to the villages and buy some food.”

  37. 16Jesus replied, "They don't have to leave. Why don't you give them something to eat?" 17But they said, "We have only five small loaves of bread and two fish.”

  38. 18Jesus asked his disciples to bring the food to him, 19and he told the crowd to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish. He looked up toward heaven and blessed the food. Then he broke the bread and handed it to his disciples, and they gave it to the people.

  39. 20After everyone had eaten all they wanted, Jesus' disciples picked up twelve large baskets of leftovers. 21There were about five thousand men who ate, not counting the women and children. This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

  40. M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your great compassion. Help us to receive your generosity with thanks, and share your gifts with others. C: Amen.

  41. APOSTLE’S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

  42. APOSTLE’S CREED And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

  43. APOSTLE’S CREED He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

  44. APOSTLE’S CREED I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen *or: Christian; ‘catholic’ here means ‘universal’

  46. Jesus our Saviour, of true joy the giver 1. Jesus has come, and brings joy as our Saviour, Alpha and Omega, see he is here! Mighty Creator, and strong to deliver, God and yet human, to us he draws near. Christians, proclaim him, the same now and ever: Jesus has come, and brings joy as our Saviour.
