Introduction Imagine this: One morning, you turn on the TV and see a special breaking news report. You see the following headline: "Entire Community Disappears!"
Introduction cont. If you had lived in 1590 (and if they had TVs back then), you might have seen this headline. The Colony of Roanoke was the first English settlement in what would become the United States. When John White, one of the original settlers, came back to Roanoke after leaving for supplies, he found that the entire colony had disappeared, including his daughter and granddaughter (the first person of English ancestry born in North America). Your mission is to find information about this “Lost Colony” and make a conclusion as to what really happened to this community.
Box 1 • There is a great explosion of settlement in the New World
Box 2 • A man named Sir Walter Raleigh asks Queen Elizabeth to finance a voyage over there
Box 3 • They landed on Hatteras Island and names it Virginia after the “Virgin Queen”
Box 4 • The white settlers met the Native Americans. Brought back to England two Indians named Manteo and Wanchese
Box 5 • The settlers returned back to England and reported to Raleigh. Manteo and Wanchese stayed the winter in England
Box 6 • Three men by the name of Richard Grenville, John White, and Ralph Lane returned back to the colony with Manteo and Wanchese.
Box 7 • They ran into trouble once in Carolina but Manteo urged his native friends to help the colonists out
Box 8 • Grenville returned back to England and left Lane and White in charge
Box 9 • The colonist had to rely on Indians and this angered them and they cut them off. Anger arose on both sides
Box 10 • John White decided to sail back to England and get supplies
Box 11 • White had a hard time getting supplies so it took 3 years for him to get back
Box 12 • Once back to the colony he noticed it was destroyed and saw the letters “CRO” on a tree and “CROATOAN” on a nearby post.
So what happened to them • Any ideas???
Theory 1 • The people of Roanoke simply left the settlement.
Theory 2 The people of Roanoke decided to leave Roanoke Island to live with the Natives.
Theory 3 The colonists were killed by the Native Americans
