What Happened to the Lost Colony Introduction, Task, Process, Evaluation, Conclusion, Teacher’s Page
Introduction • The year is 1587, Roanoke Island in what is modern day North Carolina. Over 100 men, women and children have traveled across the Atlantic to try and settle in the New World. After a few short months, supplies had run low and a trip back to England was necessary to get more. So John White returned to England but was unable to make it back to the New World for three whole years. He couldn't believe what he found when he returned…..the entire colony there at Roanoke Island had disappeared. What could have possibly happened to them????
Task Today you will be researching several different theories about what happened to the Lost Colony. You will first choose a partner and your jobs will be to read about the colony and then read at least five different theories that try and explain what happened to the colonists. Your job will be to create a digital story about the Lost Colony using the theories you researched and explain which is the most believable compared to the other ones you came across and why your theory is the best.
Process • You'll first choose a partner to work with • You will have some articles and a video that you will need to watch and view for your background knowledge. • As you read the information on the Roanoke Island colony, each of you will need to answer questions on the Background information form Links Background informationBackground information form Timeline of eventsVideo of Lost Colony Go to the next slide
Process continued (Researching the theories) • Once you've read the introductory articles, watched the video and finished the Background information form, you'll then begin to review the different theories about what happened to the colonists. • Use the following links to research; split them up between the two of you and use the worksheet to help you organize your opinions on the theories. Worksheet Article and websites with theories of what happened How Stuff WorksFox News article TheoriesLost Colony Fact of Fiction Science Daily article National Geographic Article Go to Next Slide
Process continued (Creating your digital story) • Once you’ve finished your research, your final task will be for the two of you to create a digital story retelling the Lost Colony and explaining which theory you think is actually what happened to the colonists and explaining which could not have happened as well. Below are three different websites you can use to create your story along with a video that shows you how to use each website. I have shown you what all three of these sites look like, and I will help show everyone how to create an account for the site that they want to use. • Voicethread (how to use) • Zooburst(how to use) • Story Bird (how to use)
Conclusion • As you’ve discovered, the story of the Lost Colony remains a mystery today over 400 years later. But hopefully you and your partner have been able to get a better idea of what could have possibly happened and can explain what is a possible explanation and what is just fiction. Perhaps some day, we will discover concrete evidence as to what happened to these 117 people. • And the Lost Colony is not the only unsolved mystery in our history.
