Strategy themes • Enhance the benefits of membership we will become increasingly relevant, receptive and responsive to a broader range of chemical scientists across the UK, EU and more internationally • Promote professional qualifications and ethical conduct we will promote our professional qualifications, best practice in the chemical sciences and uphold the highest ethical standards • Enhance our publishing activities we will build upon ourinternationalreputation for excellence in publishing through strengthening our core products and by encompassing a broader footprint
Strategy themes • Improve our channels of communication we will enhance the perception and image of the chemical sciences and its practitioners amongst our members, the international scientific community and the general public • Pursue activities in partnerships with other organisations we will build nationaland international alliances to further the impact of the chemical sciences and its practitioners
Strategy themes • Improve our governance, structure and financial planning we will complete the review of our governance and structure and ensure the provision of resources for the effective delivery of the strategic plan • Investing in our staff and supporting our volunteers we will develop our staff and support our volunteer network to deliver our strategy
Enhance our publishing activities • Excellence • Innovation • Speed • Value • Expand global reach • Integrate with strategic plan • Invest surplus in chemical science
RSC Publishing • 23 Journals • Historical 160 year archive • Several databases (Analytical Abstracts, Methods in Organic Synthesis…) • Ca. 45 books/year • Own web platform • Based in Cambridge • Ca. 150 staff
RSC Journals: page output 05/04 +6.5%
RSC Journals: ValueBuy Tetrahedron or all these from the RSC….. • Chem Soc Rev • Natural Product Reports • Annual Reports A, B & C • Methods in Organic Synth • Natural Product Updates • Catalysts & Catalysed React • Analytical Abstracts • CrystEngComm • A lease to the RSC archive • …and have $932 left over • Chem Comm • Dalton Trans • PCCP • Faraday Discussions • The Analyst • JAAS • J Mater Chem • New J Chem • J Environmental Monitoring • Green Chemistry • Lab on a Chip • Photochem & Photobiol Sci
RSC Journals: Charity • Publishing is a central charter object • All surplus invested in charitable RSC activities • World’s poorest countries get our front-list journals for free • World’s poorest countries get our archive for free
Chemistry World • Award winning - ALPSP Best Magazine • Vibrant news and features • Excellent recruitment medium • Award winning journalist
Library & Information Centre • Powerful information service • Professional chemist librarians • Trend towards remote e-access • E-collection growing fast • RSC journals available through LIC to members • RSC archive available through LIC to members
Issues facing RSC Publishing • Change of the business models to open access, author-pays • Strong competition for the best authors from commercial publishers • Decline in library funding relative to scientific output • The global nature of our markets • Need for constant technical innovation
What Publishing delivers • Fulfils part of the charitable remit of the Society - dissemination of information • Enhances the image of the RSC • Provides a window to the chemistry community • Introduces a truly international component • Generates income for charitable activities • Activities integrated with L&P
Increase our influence in key decision making bodies • Promote informed decision making on science and education policy throughout government and funding agencies • Play a leading role in EuCheMS and lobbying activities in Brussels • Work with Funding Councils for strong sustainable chemical science base in HE • Continue to promote the Campaign for Chemistry
Broaden our science base • Support core chemistry areas • Continue expansion into related areas: • Materials • Chemical biology • Environment, Sustainability & Energy • Develop support for ‘applied sciences’ • Build and support UK science infrastructure • Increase our global science networks
Foster the study and teaching of chemical sciences • Improved CPD and careers advice • Modernise curricula including practical work • Influence ‘Building for Future’ initiative • Broaden ‘AimHigher’ reach • Address ‘Bolognaissues’ • Develop ‘Celebrities for Science’
Enhance the benefits of membership • Modernise range of member benefits
Enhance the benefits of membership • Modernise range of member benefits • Broaden range of RSC publishing and library products/services offered Archive On-line
Enhance the benefits of membership • Enhance member networking and international support • Promote interest group activities as key benefit • Campaign for member views on key policy issues • Develop ‘one-stop-shop’ for careers • Ensure RSC is relevant, receptive and responsive to members’ needs
Promote professional qualifications and ethical conduct • Ensure that standards required for MRSC, FRSC and CChem are maintained and remain relevant • Active promotion of value of CChem with employers • Continued promotion and development of company training schemes • Develop CPD opportunities to support acquisition of designatory letters
Improve our channels of communication • Broaden scope of Chemistry World and RSC News • Launch RSC News International • Improve and expand RSC web site • Enhance council-member contact through national, regional and local meetings • Become open transparent organisation
Pursue activities in partnerships with other organisations • Continue to lead UK L&P initiatives through Parliamentary LINKS days
Pursue activities in partnership with other organisations • Become ‘partner of choice’ for others • Support development of the CLC and Science Council • Collaborate with other UK bodies to develop UK science base • Closer collaboration with national chemical societies • Host 2009 IUPAC meeting and Chemistry Olympiad
Improve our governance, structure and financial planning • Review and modernise L&P governance • Integrate new L&P structure with internal RSC organisation • Develop 5-year Financial Plan that supports core activities and minimises risks in publishing and pensions • Investigate scope for external financial support
Review of L&P governance • Review Group is Jim Feast & Elliot Finer, supported by Tony Ashmore • Group has invited submissions from Boards and Committees, and all members via RSC News. Group is meeting with Chairs of committees. All views are welcome • Aim is to produce a draft report for consideration in Q2 2006 • If feasible changes to occur at 2006 AGM
