  1. MESSAGE FROM THE CROSS (PART 2) “And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there” (Matt. 27:35-36; 54)

  2. They Watched Him To keep a vigil. To gaze. Their job was to guard the scene, to keep Jesus and others on the cross. But they noticed many things about Him. So the centurion’s words, “Truly this was the Son of God.” What do we learn as we “watch” Him on the cross.

  3. 4. A Break in an Eternal Relationship “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46) First 3 utterances – enemies, sinner, mother. The fourth was personal John 1:18 – “Ho on” “Keeps on being” in the bosom. Continuity of relationship. 2 Cor. 5:21 – when Jesus took our sin, He took our curse – Isa. 59:2; I Pet. 3:12

  4. 5. The Humanity of Jesus John 19:28; Psalm 69:21 “Wrapped in swaddling clothes”. “Questioning in the temple” “Hungry” “Weary” “Marveled” “Slept”, etc. “Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren” (Heb. 2:17). Heb. 4:15-16.

  5. 6. Completion of Task “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, He said, ‘it is finished’” (John 19:30). Not “It is the end”, but “It is completed.” Not an utterance of despair. “telelestai” – cross the goal line. Earthly work is complete. Back into heaven to finish His work there. I Cor. 15:22-28

  6. 7. Termination “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said this, He gave up the ghost” (Luke 24:46). John 10:18 – Jews didn’t kill Jesus. Romans didn’t kill Jesus. My sin didn’t kill Him. His Divine Power – Mark 14:28 Triumphal entry – Palm Sunday “Lift up your heads, O gates… That the King of Glory may come in!” (Psalm 24:7)
