  1. Pre-Columbian Civilizations In the Americas By: Mrs. RandUniversity Preparatory School

  2. Objective: Create an Aztec Codex Students will work together to create a codex demonstrating the key elements of Aztec belief, ritual, daily life, family and political structure.

  3. Instructions: • Decide which job each person in your group will do. • As a group, write 5 questions you’d like answered about your assigned topic. These should be questions you don’t already know the answer to. • For example, if your topic was Mayan beauty you might ask “Were the same things considered beautiful for both men and women?” • Show your list to Mrs. Rand for approval. • Research answers to your 5 questions. Each answer should be at least a few sentences in length. • Decide on 4 sub-topics you will include in your codex. (If your topic is an event the 4 sub-topics should be the 4 main parts of the event including a beginning, middle and end.) • On the back of your Codex paper write a paragraph about each sub topic (one per panel). • On the front of your codex turn the written paragraph into a colorful, hieroglyphic panel. This must tell the same information as the back but use no words.

  6. Create a Codex A codex was a type of book made by both the Mayans and the Aztecs. They were long strips of paper folded up to make a book. They were filled with drawings and glyphs and were very colorful. They told stories of religion, daily life and the basic history of the cultures. Your task: As a group create a 4 panel codex about a topic from Aztec history.

  9. What is a codex anyways? • A codex is a bit like book. Some told of religious ceremonies, some of great hunts in the rain forests and others detailed the duties of each person in the social structure. • Archeologists believe there were hundreds more of these codices, but Spanish explorers had decided that the worship of gods in nature was evil and therefore should be destroyed. • To decipher some of these glyphs, missionaries used natives to help them as well as clues such as the location of a glyph on a building that matched one in a codex.

  10. How do you make a codex? • A codex was made from the bark of a tree from the rain forest. First, the bark was removed from a fig tree, then it was softened in limewater to form a pulp. • The Mayans pounded this pulp into flat sheets and dried them. Ink was usually made from dyes found in plants or in the ground. This way, the stories would be colorful and depict happenings accurately. • When the information was completed on the codex, the paper was folded accordion style and a cover was often added. Some book covers were made from deer hides.
