Respiratory system Period A
Warm Up Question _____ is not good for your lungs. • Exercising • Singing • Smoking • Yelling Part A
Respiratory system To bring oxygen into your body, and remove the carbon dioxide from your body, we use the respiratory system. Your body needs oxygen to survive. Part A
5 Fun Facts • The right lung is slightly larger than the left. • The breathing rate is faster in children. • Sneezes travel at about 100 miles per hour. • Your workout will often make you sneeze. • Children breathing only through the mouth have an increased risk at developing a lisp. Part A
Major Organs Lungs- oxygen is taken in, and carbon dioxide is breathed out through respiration Trachea- Also known as the windpipe, the trachea filters the air we breathe Bronchi- Air tubes that carry air to the lungs Diaphragm- It contacts when breathing. It’s a muscle located under the lungs, and enlarges the space the lungs are in Part B
Diagram Part B
Fun Fact Why Do People Yawn? When someone’s sleepy, they don’t get enough oxygen when breathing. In response, the brain makes a person take a long and deep breath; a yawn. Part B
Circulatory System: The Respiratory System is necessary during this other body system because the blood carries oxygen around the body which is received by the lungs during respiration. Part B
Pathway • Oxygen enters the nostrils • It goes through the trachea • Into the left & right bronchi • Re-branches into the bronchioles • Lungs inflate with the compression of the diaphragm • Diaphragm pushes air and lungs deflate, and CO2 exits the mouth or nostrils Part C
Bronchitis • Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchial tubes, or the pathway that carries oxygen. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Often times, smoking is the cause of severe bronchitis. Part C
Fact How asthma works: Asthma is a chronic disease that affects the lung’s airways. The band of muscle around them tightens, reducing the breath. In asthma patients, this is caused sometimes by irritants, (ex. Smoke) heavy breathing (often from exercise), or cold weather. Rescue inhalers make it easier to breathe, but inhaled steroids are often a daily medication. Part C
Slide #14 • A common disease that effects the respiratory system, is Lung Cancer. • Lung Cancer can occur in one or both lungs • Cancer affects the lung cells so that the cells cannot function properly, which is to carry oxygen to blood. Part D
Slide #15 • The Respiratory system helps the Circulatory system by moving oxygen throughout the body so cells can do work • It also helps the Circulatory remove waste (like CO2) Part D
Slide #16 The average adult with clean lungs can hold his/her breath for a minute and 30 seconds. The longest world record for breath holding is held by StigSeverinsen. He held his breath underwater for 20 minutes and 00 seconds. Part D
Slide #17 • What is another name for the windpipe? a) Lungs b) Larynx c) Trachea d) Esophagus • What important activity takes place in the lungs? a) Food is digested b) Liquid waste is exchanged for carbon dioxide c) The trachea is exchanged for the larynx d) Oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide Part D
Slide #18 • To go on living, the body’s cells need food, water, chemicals, and… a) helium b) Oxygen c) vegetables d)carbon dioxide • What is Cancer? Explain in a sentence or two. Part D
