  1. Welcome Winston Park 2013-2014 Upper Academy Open House

  2. Attendance • Winston Park K-8 believes that school is the child’s place of work. Each student must assume the responsibility of being present and on time every day. • MDCPS’ policy is that all absences are UNEXCUSED initially. If a student is absent, they must bring a note from a parent/guardian or a physician within two days of the absence, and submit the note to their homeroom teacher TO RECEIVE AN ADMIT. • If a student’s absence is excused, make-up work will be provided. • If a student’s absence is unexcused, make-up work will not be provided.

  3. Attendance • If a student is absent for more than two consecutive days, parents need to contact the school. • If a parent has prior knowledge that a student will be absent from school for an extended period, the administrative office must be informed as soon as possible, and the parent needs to complete the “pre-arranged” absence form. • Not informing the school of an upcoming extended absence will render those absences unexcused.

  4. Block Schedule Absences • On most days, when a student misses a class period, it counts as two absences. Therefore, if a student is absent from a class period 2 times, the student will be counted absent 4 times. This will be reflected on their report card.

  5. Tardy Policy • Being on time, alert and ready to learn are all important factors for success in school. • Being on time is defined as being in their seat by 8:35 a.m. • 1-2 Tardies – Verbal Warning • 3 Tardies - Office will make contact • 4+ - Meeting with Administration Visit from Social Worker

  6. Academics • Students will read 30 minutes silently during the homeroom period. Students are also required to read a minimum of 30 minutes each day at home, including weekends. All students are required to complete a specific number of Reading Plus assignments. Required Reading will be monitored through the Language Arts classes. • Students must bring a book to class on a daily basis. • Students receive a conduct grade for Homeroom.

  7. Homelearning Policy • Students will receive approximately 1 to 2 hours of Homelearning per night(including reading for at least 30 minutes at home on a daily basis. • They will receive Homelearning assignments that include reading, written assignment s, projects, or study time. Studying for a test is extremely important. • Homework assistance will be available every day after school hours for CORE subject homework • Students are required to complete and turn in assignments by the due date. No late assignments will be accepted unless a student has an excused absence.

  8. Home Learning Policy • If a student has an excused absence, make-up work will be provided but it is the student’s responsibility to request it. • Students are required to write their Home learning assignments in their agendas on a daily basis. • Please make sure that you check the agenda every day. • The Agenda can serve as a great form of communication between parents and teachers.
