  2. BUDDHISM AND SUPERSTITION โหระพา The tourist sees a spirit house in a Thai house. He wonders what it is. Tourist : What is that miniature house raised on the post?

  3. Guide : It’s cailed a spirit house. It’s a dwelling place for the spirit of the land. An ancient belief holds that each piece of land has a guardian spirit who must be honoured if the human occupants are to enjoy peace and prosperity.

  4. Guide : Many Thais also believe that certain trees, forests, mountains and caves have resident spirit or phis, as they are known in Thai, and each must be given a dwelling place.

  5. Tourist : Must it be placed in front of the house? Guide : Not always. A site will be selected after complex astrological consideration. Usually it is placed in the garden but in the case of large commercial properties like modern condominiums, it may be placed on the top of the building.

  6. Tourist : Do they all have the same shape? Guide : The size and shape vary. Simple spirit houses may be in the form of a miniature Thai – style house, made of wood, raised on a post, while more elaborate ones may resemble small temples.

  7. Tourist : And after it’s been put up, then what happens? Guide : Well, it has to be kept supplied with regular offerings of fresh flowers, incense sticks, fruits and sometimes food, to ensure the continued protection of the spirit.
