Background • Flightless birds have more feathers than other birds. • Flightless birds have smaller bones in their wings. (wings are too small for their bodies) • These birds have to rely heavily on swimming or running. • Some have claws on their feet to protect them from predators.
Why don’t they fly? • It is believed that flightless birds evolve from birds that can fly and they evolved because of lack of predators. This is not the case for all flightless birds though. • Emu

The smallest flightless bird is the Inaccessible Island Rail that weighs 32.7 grams and has a length of 12.5 cm. • The largest flightless bird is the Ostrich which weighs 156 kg and who’s length is 2.7 meters.
