Bioinformatics and data management is an important aspect and a pre-requisite for the identification of all species in life especially in the sciences . . Bioinformatics is a discipline that applies the principles of information sciences and technologies to make the vast ,diverse, and complex life sciences data more understandable and useful . . Nigeria is endowed with huge genetic resources ;hence the need for the application of biodiversity informatics towards exploiting her potentials . . Certain limitations into the use of biodiversity informatics for proper germplasm data / inventory includes low funding ,inadequate capacity – building ,non-applicability of the novel biotechnology tools, policy and developmental problems and erratic power supply among others . . These challenges /constraints must be overcomed /addressed to be able to improve the Nations biodiversity information (B.I.) status . s The potentials / Resultant effects of B.I. systems to genebanks . . Complete passport data /information for exchange and global use . . Proper inventory of collection data’s / programs . . Assist Nigeria’s variety release program and intellectual property right . . General improvement in agricultural practices and products ,especially in selection of breeding lines . . Protection of endangered species of plants and animals . . Avoidance of unwanted duplication in genebank collections .
