  2. Volcanic Effects • Lava: buries whatever is in its path • Pyroclastic Clouds: burn, bury or asphyxiate everything in their path • Ash: various sizes falling back to Earth; finer stuff getting up into atmosphere; lethal to plants, animals, and people

  3. Debris Flows: similar to rock slides • Lahars: hot ash melts surrounding snow or ice and creates a muddly river • Craters and calderas: when the top of the volcano is blown off; when it collapses in on itself

  4. Also, injects huge amounts of CO2, SO2, HCl, HF and ash into the air. Can cause: • Coolingfood supplies • Destruction of ozone • Acid rain • Global warming

  5. Upwelling • Hot spots and divergent boundaries • Water from hot fissures is warm and nutrient rich • Bacteria thrive and bring other ocean organismsbiological community!

  6. Effects of Earthquakes • Aside from fear created by shaking: • Liquefaction • Landslides • Tsunami • Damage to buildings

  7. Mountain Building • How might this affect plant and animal life? • Diversity • How might this affect waterways? • Drainage patterns, rivers
