Effects of Human Activity on water Overgrazing: when plants are exposedtointensivegrazing for extended periods of time, or without sufficient recoveryperiods. Effects: • Animals run out of crops • Increases soil erosion • Damaged grasslands retain less moisture
Effects of Human Activity on water SOLUTION: Conserve water Only use water during early morning hours during times of low precipitation such as summer
Effects of Human Activity on water Pollution: the release of toxins from humans into the air or into sewage systems Effects: • Storm water or excessive irrigation water running over our lawns, sidewalks, streets and parking lots take fertilizers and pesticides, motor oil and heavy metals into waterways • Improper waste disposal: partially treated sewage from our homes and businesses run to waterways (after leaving treatment plant) • Burning of coal, oil, and gas emit carbon dioxide which leads to acid rain
Effects of Human Activity on water Fertilizer use: excess fertilizer results in nitrogen-rich water that leads to surface water Effect: • Algal blooms (algae grows too much) • Lack of dissolved oxygen in water death of fish and other marine animals
Effects of Human Activity on water Oil use: use of cooking oil and pouring it down the sink and changing car oil and pouring it in the grass leads to oil in water ways that doesn’t dissolve or mix with water Effect: • Oil rigs leak or releaseoilintowaterways • Oil reduces the amount of insulation an animal can get from its fur or feathers, so seabirds and seamammals often dieofhypothermia.
