Tools for promoting assessment and reflection on Shared Decision Making Dr. Amy Lloyd and Professor Adrian Edwards
Aims and overview • Aims of session • Learn more about how to do SDM • Learn more about some of the tools available for assessing SDM • Explore the challenges of assessing SDM • Overview • Making Good Decisions in Collaboration (MAGIC) • SDM model for clinical practice • Using tools (SureScore and CollaboRATE) to assess consultations • Discussion
Five year Shared Decision Making (SDM) implementation programme in primary and secondary care, across sites in Cardiff and Newcastle: • Phase I(Aug 2010 – Jan 2012) focused on developing and testing of interventions to promote SDM, using QI methodology: • SDM skills training package • Brief decision support tools (Option Grids/BDAs), • Decision specific Decision Quality Measures (DQMs) • Patient activation campaign (‘Ask 3 Questions’). • Phase II (Feb 2012 – Oct 2013) focused on the wider dissemination, implementation and sustainability of the SDM interventions in clinical practice. • Phase III (Dec 2013 – Nov 2015) aims to evaluate implementation phases by exploring the nature, process and perceived outcomes of SDM encounters from the patient perspective.
Discussion • Pair up with someone who used a different assessment tool and discuss the following: • What skills did you observe? • Did the assessment tool capture all of the skills you observed? • How do the assessment tools compare? • What skills are the skills you want to teach? • What other skills would you want to see? • Can you use these scales for aiding teaching/learning/reflection with undergraduate students? • What is needed next?
Key learning • Tools for promoting assessment and reflection on SDM • Assessment and reflection is cornerstone of SDM implementation • SDM model can help to define elements of SDM • Developing effective tools for assessment remains challenging
