SETSC OBJECTIVES • Provide a forum to discuss broader truck safety issues • Promote interstate & interagency co-operation & co-ordination • Promote Truck Safety within the local community • Interact with other similar groups and help in lobbying on key road infrastructure issues • Provide & receive feedback to/from road users, particularly truck operators

  4. SETSC Coverage • Extends from Bairnsdale in south to Nowra in north • Includes Tablelands north to Tallaganda • Native and plantation forestry • Total log haulage around 1.7m tonnes • Employment direct 1200; indirect 1800

  5. Public land dominates • 87% of East Gippsland comprises public land • In NSW, ranges from 72% in Eurobodalla LGA to 22% in Palerang, average of 45% across 6 LGAs.

  6. Land tenures

  7. Key Industry Players • Main growers - Forests NSW 1,200,000t - VicForests 400,000t - Private property 100,000t • Main processors - SEFE (Eden) 1,000,000t - Pentarch (Eden) 250,000t - Visy (Tumut) 110,000t - Sawmills (several) 340,000t

  8. The haulage network • Primary haulage routes include Princes, Monaro and Snowy Mountains Highways. Volumes vary, increasing with proximity to Edrom Road. • Edrom Road- 1.3m tonnes annually • Imlay Road – 700,000 tonnes annually

  9. Volumes over main roads

  10. Imlay and Edrom Roads • Sealed roads built by NSW Forestry Commission in 1960s and 1970s. • Imlay Road (57kms) links Monaro Highway with Princes Highway • Edrom Road (17kms) links Princes Highway with Twofold Bay – SEFE and export wharf • Imlay Road is the only unbroken 25m B-double approved route traversing the GDR between the Victorian border and the Illawarra.

  11. Imlay and Edrom (cont’d) • Because Forests NSW is not a Road Management Authority (RTA and Councils are), we do not attract Gov’t funding • Currently funded on proportional usage basis by timber industry users (SEFE, VicForests, FNSW). Other users are not contributing. • Consultants report has identified need to increase funding in short term to address urgent needs.

  12. Contract Report Edrom Road and Imlay Road—analysis of inspection and test data for Works Program development for Forests NSW—Southern Region January 2011
