  2. Legislation update • Consultations on proposed changes/amendments to S.K, OH&S legislation are currently underway. • Web location www.labour.gov.sk.ca • These are the first in a series of consultations that will look at ways to enhance OH&S legislation and regulations.

  3. Continued • Regularly updating and amending the act and regulations is an important component in the OH&S Div’s Action plan. • Since launching this action plan in 2003 injury rates have dropped 18%. But we still have the second highest injury rate in the country

  4. Continued • Health and safety is everyone’s concern, please take the time to review these proposed priority, housekeeping and administrative amendments and send us your feedback Via email ohsreview@lab.gov.sk.ca by March 30, 2007.

  5. Continued • These priority recommendations are expected to have the greatest impact on reducing S.K rate of workplace injury, illness and fatalities • These proposals are largely based on the OH&S Councils recommendations.

  6. Continued • The process: • Call for submissions in 2004 • 11 task teams established/broad cross section • Reviewed a 112 submissions • Provided report to Minister 2006 • Dept assessing new submissions

  7. Continued • Given the amount of recommendations proposed there was a need to have a phased in stepped approach • 23 proposed priority recommendations • Plan to initiate a phase-in process starting this spring • Further consultations in the fall on proposed general amendments

  8. Continued • Regulatory changes being considered include a focused effort to reduce injuries in several sectors such as the health care, construction, manufacturing and petroleum sectors.

Some note worth proposed amendments include: • Expanding the duties on suppliers associated with the petroleum equipment and supplies used the patch • Respiratory protection/CSA standards • Noise control • Fall protection • Safeguarding of equipment and machines • Inspection and maintenance of powered mobile equipment • Hoist and cranes requirements

  10. Continued • Location of underground services and the role/duties of the owner • Confined space entry • Chemical and biological substances • Asbestos abatement prior to demolition activity • Enhance high voltage safety training for electrical workers

  11. Continued • Hot work and hot taps • Forestry operations • Supervisors duties during a rig move • Handling of tubular loads and storage system on leases

  12. Continued • Safe work zone around rotary table during drilling operations • Safe work zone around pressurized piping systems • Fire fighters.
