American Disabilities Act (ADA)Definition of disability • has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities • has a record of such an impairment • is regarded as having such an impairment.
Learning goals for Adapted PE • Physical and motor skills for everyday life • Fundamental Athletic skills (throwing, catching, etc) • Life time love for movement and exercise • Enjoyment through exercise
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) This act makes it required that Physical Education must be taught between ages 3-21 to students who qualify for special education services for their specific disability
Adapted PE National Standards (APENS) • Created to Standardize Adapted PE • Assess knowledge of teachers • Goal is for all students who need Adapted PE to have a qualified teacher For more info on APENS Click Here
Adapted PE Teacher Requirements • Bachelors Degree in Physical Education • 200 hours experience with students with disabilities • A class in adapted PE • Teaching Certificate
Ability types for Adapted PE • Autism • Down syndrome • Deafness • Blindness • Physical Disability
Autism A developmental disorder that leads to deficits in several areas • Communication • Limited interests • Social interaction • Limited focus
Downs Syndrome A developmental disorder resulting from the presence of a 21st chromosome in a person, Symptoms include • Cognitive Disability • Flat face • Short Stature
Deafness The partial or total loss of hearing that could be resulting from numerous different events
Blindness A state of lacking ability to see, partial or complete loss of sight
Physical Disability Disability that effects muscular or skeletal system that impairs ability to move • Paralysis • Muscular Dystrophy • Multiple Sclerosis • Amputee
Adapted Games • Soccer • Basketball • Softball
Soccer • Smaller Field • Soft ball for safety • Adaptations to rules to allow all to play • Specialized equipment
Basketball • Smaller and softer ball • Adjustable rim height • Use of two hands to dribble • Larger rim area for easier scoring
Softball • Use adapted gloves and balls with Velcro • Larger bat • Smaller field • Tee-ball can be utilized
