Take out your warm ups and get ready to identify dystopian elements, tho.
Anthem By: Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand “My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute.”
Collectivism • Emphasizes the importance of community. • The needs of the group are more important than the needs of a person. • Society is more valuable than its individual members.
Individualism • Exact opposite of collectivism. • Stresses: • Self reliance • Individual Liberty • Independence • Opposes any power that limits an individual’s right to choose.
Ayn Rand • Rand was born in Russia in 1905, to a fairly well-off, intellectual Jewish family. • At age twelve, she witnessed the Russian Revolution, in which the communists (most definitely "collectivists") took over the county • The communistsbegan to take awayproperty from the well-off in the name of "the proletariat" (the poor, working class). • Rand's family lost almost everything to the governmentand Rand herself was later almost expelled from the university for not being "proletarian" enough.
