ICCAGRA – EUFAR Meeting31 March-2 April • Andrew Roberts, Jim Weber and I met with two of three primary members of EUFAR (European Fleet for Airborne Research), Germany (DLR) and UK Met Office (other primary member, France (Meteo-France) representative was on deployment (to the Seychelles!) • Also met with President, ISPRS, in London – couple ICCAGRA into ISPRS (Stressa, Italy Meeting, May 2009) • Developing strategy to allow more effective and efficient collaboration between EUFAR members and ICCAGRA • DLR’s new GV550 was modified to take advantage of engineering on NSF GV • Wing Pods will be developed separately, but communications/power will be compatible • DLR participate with Falcon 20 in T-PARC; BAe 146 participated in T-REX and will participate in VOCALS

EUFARDescription • Integrated Infrastructure Initiative of the 6th Framework of the European Commission (Research and Technology Development) • 24 European Institutions operate 24 instrumented aircraft • Meteo - France is in the planning for the acquisition of a C-130; we will assist them in platform evaluation and in modification definition • Provides users with Transnational Access • Coordinating the network for exchanging knowledge, developments and building the unified structure required for improving access to the infrastructures • Networking activities (i.e., With ESF), 1 M Euros • Transnational Access, 3 M Euros • Joint Research, 1 M Euros • These funds are for coordination and educational activities; each institution receives its unique funding

Countries Represented • France, Germany, Netherlands, UK, Spain, Israel, Finland, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Ireland, Romania • Multiple Institutions in a single country, e.g., Germany: DLR; Technical University, Braunschweig; Freie University, Berlin; Forschungszentrum, Karlsruhe; Leibniz-Institut fur Tropospharenforschung, Leipzig; Alfred Wegener Institut, Bremerhaven

Types of Activities • Transnational Access • Access offered to 24 instrumented a/c ranging from low and slow single engine to 4 engine turbo jet • Joint Research Activity • Design and construct Aerosol Reference Pod that can be flown on several a/c and serve as a basis for inter-calibration • Have this stand-alone payload available for various a/c in EUFAR fleet and operated as a common European instrument • EUFAR Expert Working Groups • Certification and Operations • Data Issues • Instrument Design and Installation

  9. Possible Next Steps • Stephen Mobbs, FAAM head, suggests bi-lateral agreements with the 3 primary EUFAR members and ICCAGRA members • UK • Germany • France • He and I will have a telecon on this suggestion next week • Mobbs will be meeting at NCAR to discuss initial MOA in early June
