WHY DO WE USE RICER? • To speed up the recovery process. • If RICER is not used, the injury will take longer to repair and will have less strength and flexibility.
WHAT DOES THE ACRONYM RICER STAND FOR? • R - Rest • I - Ice • C - Compression • E - Elevation • R - Referral
R - Rest • WHY? • To reduce bleeding into the injury and prevent further injury. • HOW? • Place in a comfortable position with the injury elevated and supported. • TIME? • Until beginning a program of careful mobilisation.
I - Ice • WHY? • To reduce pain, blood flow, swelling, spasm, enzyme activity, tissue damage for oxygen. • HOW? • Crushed ice in wet towel wrapped around injury, frozen gel packs using a towel as insulator or immersion in a bucket of ice. • TIME? • 20 minutes every hour up to four days.
C - Compression • WHY? • It decreases bleeding and reduces swelling. • HOW? • Wrap an elastic bandage over the injured area, covering both above and below the site. • TIME? • At the time of injury • reapplied periodically for at least 24 hours.
E - Elevation • WHY? • Decreases bleeding, reduces swelling and reduces throbbing. • HOW? • Raise the injured area above the level of the heart by placing support (eg: a pillow) under the injury. • TIME? • Whenever possible during the day and for the following two or three nights.
R - Referral • WHY? • To understand the nature and extent of the injury and to seek guidance in a rehabilitation program. • HOW? • Appointment with doctor or physiotherapist. • TIME? • As soon as possible following the injury.
