National Engineers Week • First time SEMS involvement • Identified E-Week Coordinator, Kent Alverson, and assigned $500 budget • February speaker & presentation • Nine members visited two Detroit area Middle School science classes • Discussed the many opportunities an engineering career has to offer • Answered questions about the engineer profession • Conducted a laser light and sound demonstration • Student teams competed to build the largest paper tower Region V RAC, April 25-27
ASME Volunteers Needed • Southeastern Michigan Section Visits Local Middle Schools • “Engineering: Turning Ideas into Reality. . .” • The section needs your help to share the world of engineering with middle school students. We are planning interactive sessions to present to several groups of students at two local schools. Industry Roundtable • Launched by volunteer Tom Libertiny and Regional staff member Tom Wendt, meets once per month • Grown to include over 20 professionals • Members include executives from the automotive industry and the automotive supplier base • Current initiative is focused on improving undergraduate education, the two specific areas being developed: • 1) Volunteering to teach particular portions of an engineering class • 2) Volunteering to participate with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) • The benefit: Students, businesses, and universities all win under the above scenario • Students obtain real life examples of how their knowledge will help them to solve problems found in industry • Businesses receive students that are well rounded and understand how the engineering profession fits within a technology based business • Universities get additional resources at not cost Region V RAC, April 25-27

Keys to Success • Develop programming targeted at Young Engineers • Recruit YE’s to get involved in the section • Talk to them at events! • Invite them to future meetings • Ask them in they are interested in getting involved in the section, join a committee, or help plan a meeting • National Engineers Week and Community Service related activities are of significant interest to YE’s • Follow up with YE’s by phone and e-mail • Contact and work with your local student sections • Assign an industry advisor to specifically work with each student section • Organize a joint meeting or tour with the student section on their campus • Promote scholarships and involvement in the region (RSLS, RSC, etc) and with other student sections Region V RAC, April 25-27
