  1. SPEECH AND DEBATE A power point for Aspen Academy Language Arts 2010-11By Mrs. Smith

  2. FORENSICS Derived from the Greek language, it refers to courts of law. Aristotle divided speech into three categories: forensic speaking (in a court of law); deliberative speaking (in the legislative assembly), and epideictic speaking (in a ceremony or other special occasion).

  3. National Forensic League This NFL has nothing to do with blitzing linebackers. It is all about clever arguments and polished deliveries.

  4. A term that lives on The term forensics is still used today in a different way. For example, a doctor who specializes in the study of medicine in relation to the determination of legal questions, practices forensic medicine. And the term still refers to public speaking.

  5. THE NFL What does the NFL have to do with speech? Is it about the speech made after winning the Super Bowl?

  6. NFL and NJFL The NFL governs high school speech and debate competition. The NJFL runs the middle school division.

  7. What do Oprah, the voice of Bart Simpson, Adam Sandler, and Nelson Mandela have in common? They are former members of the NFL. They honed their speaking skills on their high school speech and debate team.

  8. Why compete in speech and debate? Learn to overcome and calm speaking anxieties

  9. Gain valuable training for college and future careers

  10. Increase public communication skills

  11. Develop improved study habits and research skills, along with time management and organizational skills.

  12. Improve critical thinking and reasoning skills; increase awareness of current events/issues; learn to see both sides of an issue

  13. Be more prepared to speak at a moment’s notice

  14. Learn how to lose gracefully and how to accept criticism and to be judged

  15. Learn to work with others; perform with virtually no warning, andrespect opposing opinions

  16. SPEAKING SKILLS ARE ESSENTIAL IN A MYRIAD OF AREAS Talking to friends Talking to friends’ parents Talking to teachers Talking to coaches

  17. SPEAKING SKILLS OPEN DOORS Ace a job interview Score a raise at a part-time job in your future as a caddy, baby sitter, life guard, waitress or waiter, cashier, sports coach

  18. SPEAKING SKILLS BOOST ACADEMIC GROWTH The skills polished in researching, writing and delivering speeches deliver A’s now and benefit a host of careers later.
