  3. A Day in the Life of Grade 5

  4. Students Arrive via Bus or Parent Drop off

  5. Teams • All students are on a team • Grade 5 has three teams: • 5-1 = Yellow • 5-2 = Red • 5-3 = Blue • Each team has 4 classroom teachers & 1special education teacher • Students eat lunch and have recess with their team • Students will switch teachers within their team for math or science lessons

  6. Morning Meeting Students begin the day greeting each other, sharing news and information, participate in a class activity, and go over the schedule of the day. Morning Meeting sets the tone for all students to have a successful and meaningful day. Morning Meeting provides students an opportunity to practice skills of friendliness & social interest. In addition, it helps students to merge social, emotional, & intellectual learning.

  9. Specials Art Music TBS has a variety of “specials” that all students participate in. Students travel with their homeroom class to each “special” class.

  10. Physical Education Remind your child to wear sneakers on PE day!

  11. Health Health class is offered for ½ the school year. Some of the topics students learn about are nutrition, germs, disease, growth & development, and internet safety.

  12. Computer Class Computer Class is very exciting here at TBS. Students continue to learn new skills and learn how to save to their own account on the network.Students attend computer class with their homeroom teacher, and students are able to go to the computer lab when they need to do extra work. In addition, students will have their own email address through Avon Public Schools. Students will learn the ins and outs of email, and appropriate email etiquette.

  13. Library Students in 5th grade visit the library for lessons with the librarian once a week for half of the school year. The second half of the year, grade 5 classes visit the library to work on research projects. Students may visit the library any time for book checkout; students may check out as many books as they wish. Please checkout our Summer Reading program online on the Avon Public  School website.

Spanish Class • The Spanish program for grade 5 is centered around communicative - language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.  • Spanish class meets 2x/week for 25 minutes each session • Topics & Language that are taught include: • Greetings & salutations Introduce self to others Personal feelings • Count from 1 – 100 Colors Calendar • Clothes & body parts Seasons & weather expressions • Cultural practices, traditions, & • holidays in Spanish speaking countries

  16. Band, Chorus, Orchestra Students are given the opportunity to choose which section(s) of music they would like to participate in. All three music sections rehearse as a whole ensemble during the targeted instruction block. Band & Orchestra have additional lesson times during the school day.

  17. Lunch Students still eat lunch. We have both hot lunch and deli selection in the cafeteria. We have an outdoor patio for students to sit and eat. The team decides which day each team eats outside.

  20. Targeted Instruction • Time for students to work independently, read quietly, or receive extra support from adults in the building. • Performance music students will meet for their full ensemble rehearsal during TI time.

  21. Main Office As you enter TBS, the main office is on your right hand side. If students arrive late, or are dismissed early, you will sign them in/out at the Main Office. If you come into school for any reason, we ask you to sign in and out.

  22. School Nurse Mrs. Farrell is our School Nurse. If your child requires any type of medication, Mrs. Farrell will distribute it.

  23. School Rules • Be safe, Be caring, Be respectful, and Be here and ready. • Cell phonesmay be brought to school, but must remain in a student’s backpack from the time he/she boards the bus to the time he/she steps off the bus at the end of the day • Pictures/videos may NOT be taken (including on bus) • iPods may be brought for use on the bus. Content must be age-appropriate • iPads, Kindles, Nooks, etc. are considered appropriate for reading • TBS/Bus Company are not responsible for lost/stolen items
