  3. What is a Mentor? • Caring person who is willing to serve as a role model • Person who provides support, encouragement and positive perspective • Person who provides ongoing contact with the Mentee

  4. Type of Mentoring • Natural mentoring • Through friendship & collegiality • Planned mentoring • Structured programs • www.mentoring.org • www.managementmentors.com

  5. Attributes of a Good Mentor • Strong Interpersonal Skills • Patient and Good Listener • Confident in their own Abilities • Willingness to Share their Personal Experiences

  6. Attributes - continued • Knowledge of the Business • Knows about training opportunities • Knows about career opportunities • Knows about volunteer opportunities

  7. Attributes - continued • Interested in Someone Else’s Growth • Allows them to develop at their own pace • Help them take risks and accept failure • Always supportive

  8. Why is Mentoring Important to NYSFAAA? • Helps retain the next generation of leaders • Improves leadership skills • Develops new leaders • Enhances career development of our members – Fast track

  9. Why is Mentoring Important to the Mentor? • Satisfaction from Helping Others • Expanded Perspectives • Powerful Personal Insight • Opportunity share experience and wisdom • Reaffirmation of our own path • Meaningful relationships/friendships

  10. Why is Mentoring Important to Mentees? • Provides a safety net • Provides an opportunity to test new ideas • Provides candid/honest feedback • Lessens stress • Accelerates learning • Provides support

  11. Excuses for not being a Mentor • I don’t have the time • I don’t feel “qualified” • I don’t want to be involved • I don’t think it is necessary • I am not needed

  12. Real Reason to be a Mentor • NYSFAAA needs active, life long members • It is the right thing to do!

  13. What Now?? • Please get involved • Mentor someone in NYSFAAA • Bring someone to every meeting you attend • Set a goal to become more involved yourself
