School-Based Adaptive Athletics • Cross-Categorical, competition-based athletics program for students with disabilities that attend Milwaukee Public Schools. • Athlete Eligibility: • Between the ages of 6 and 21. • Attend an MPS school. • Require modifications in time, equipment, rules in order to effectively and successfully participate in athletics.

School-Based Adaptive Athletics School Responsibilities • Complete and submit paperwork • Accurate, Alphabetical Order, and On time • Parental permission slips/waivers • Train athletes • Hold practices whenever possible to get students ready. • Promote appropriate warm-ups to prevent injury, the importance of practicing to improve, etc. • Communicate with school nurses. • Communicate with CATP work site coordinators. • Arrange for worksite transportation. • Obtain classroom coverage (if needed). • Arrange for bag lunches (if needed). • Complete evaluations and give feedback of the program.

School-Based Adaptive Athletics Program Responsibilities • Communicate all event information to coaches. • Provide and arrange transportation. • Coordinate and facilitate all Adaptive Athletics-sponsored events. • Serve as a resource to assist schools in understanding the program’s paperwork and training components. • Enter all athlete information, division all participants. • Provide event rosters and nametags. • Arrange for nursing services at events. • Provide as many athletic opportunities for athletes to participate in as possible.

  9. 2013-2014 School-Based Program Changes/Reminders • NEW! Volleyball Skills Clinic – December 2013 • NEW! Soccer Skills Competition – May 2014 • Basketball Skills Competition – addition of 4’ basketball hoops for Level 1 participants • Bocce Ball – addition of two dates (room for program growth) • Track & Field – five program revisions • Combination of middle & high school meets, reclassification of JR & SR age specifications • Elimination of shot-put in all meets; add the Turbo Jav • Elimination of running long jump for Elem/K-8 meets • 4X50 M Shuttle for Elem/K-8 meets • Both 4X50 M Shuttle and 4X100 M Relay for Secondary meets

Training Assistance & Equipment Loaning • Bowling sets must be signed up for by Monday, Sept 16th • All equipment requests are made through Jerry Vance, Resource Assistant at 647-6071 or vancejx@milwaukeerecreation.net • Training Assistance must be made through Katie Seitz, Assistant Supervisor at 647-3860 or katie@milwaukeerecreation.net • Upon your request, our team of part-time staff (retired MPS PE teachers) will train your school staff and students on sports skills development and skills testing • Each school is eligible for two training assistance appointments which can be scheduled between 9 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (45 minutes to 1 hour session each)

MPS Special Olympics • Athlete Qualifications • Primary cognitive disability • Age 8 or older • Valid Medical and Release Form on file with both MPS Adaptive Athletics and Special Olympics Wisconsin. • Program Structure • Practice takes place at school. • Entries submitted to the MPS Adaptive Athletics Office. All MPS entries turned in together to the Regional or State Special Olympics Offices. • Transportation to Special Olympics events is available. • Athletes at schools without a Special Olympics program can participate with Team Milwaukee.

MPS Special Olympics Athletic Opportunities • Fall Season (September-December) OCTOBER 1st • Bowling OR Volleyball • Winter Season (November-January) DECEMBER 1ST • Snowshoe Racing • Indoor Season (January-April) FEBRUARY 1ST • Team Basketball, Basketball Skills, OR Gymnastics • Summer Season APRIL 1ST • Athletics, Aquatics, OR Soccer • Outdoor Season (With Team Milwaukee) JULY 1ST • Softball, Tee ball, Tennis, Bocce

School Responsibilities • Help athletes obtain medicals/submit medical paperwork to MPS Adaptive Athletics. • Train athletes regularly. • Complete competition paperwork and submit to MPS Adaptive Athletics. • Keep track of signed permission slips. • Complete door-to-door transportation requests. • Arrange for payment of all invoices. • Attain appropriate school uniforms for all participating athletes. • Attend/chaperone all Special Olympics events with participating athletes.

MPS Adaptive Athletics Office Program Responsibilities • Communicate all event information to coaches. • Seek opportunities to provide sports physicals and coordinate with schools. • Coordinate transportation. • Collect and submit all MPS entries and check for accuracy. • Create and distribute all MPS invoices. • Communicate regularly with Special Olympics Wisconsin and Greater Milwaukee Area offices. • Advocate for MPS athletes and coaches. • Serve as MPS representative at all Special Olympics coach’s meetings. • Coordinate MPS Certified Coaches Trainings. • Attend all Special Olympics events.

Changes/Reminders for 2013-2014 • Coach Certifications • All certifications expire on December 31st of the third year. • State Scratch Deadlines • The Friday after entries are due. • Team Basketball • Regional Team Basketball will be two days at Homestead. • Sectional Team Basketball will be in Pleasant Prairie. • Team basketball rosters can now be a maximum of 12 players. • Athletes not listed on the roster can NOT sit on the bench
