5th Grade Expectations • 5th grade is a preparation year for middle school. • Switch classes for subjects • Use binders for organization • Students are held accountable for keeping track of assignments • Communication through class websites, digital newsletters, and planners**Check EVERY Monday
Assessments Common Formative Assessments • These are done before and during a unit. • Common formatives among the grade level. • Not always used as a grade. Summative Assessments • Given at the end of a unit. • Common summatives among the grade level. • Used as a grade.
What Will My Child Learn in ELA? • 1st 9 Weeks • Use context clues and word parts to determine the meaning of unknown words. • Compare/contrast characters, settings, events. • Determine 2 or more main ideas of a non-fiction text. • Using information from multiple sources to answer questions. • 2nd 9 Weeks • Theme of stories, dramas, & poems. • Figurative language • Relationships & interactions between individuals, events, ideas or concepts in non-fiction. • Compare/contrast overall structure of 2 or more texts • 3rd 9 Weeks • Summarize stories, dramas, and poems. • Point of view • Visual and multimedia elements • Multiple accounts of the same topic or event. • 4th 9 Weeks • Compare/contrast stories; themes & topics • Integrating info from several texts
ReadingHomework • Nightly reading of at least 20 minutes. • Log reading online at Reading-Rewards.com • Weekly Comprehension Story handed out on Mondays; Due Fridays.
This is a rewards based program that our school purchased to encourage reading. • Students take short quizzes after reading a book. • Each quarter there is a special event for all 5th grade readers who make the quarterly goal of 30 points with 80% accuracy. • 4th Quarter goal is 125 Points TOTAL for the whole year. 1st Quarter Event – Popcorn and Movie 2nd Quarter Event – Ice Cream and Extra Recess 3rd Quarter Event – Karaoke Party 4th Quarter Event – Game Truck and Laser Tag

5th Grade is assessed in ELA, Writing, Math, and Science. It is our goal to make sure your child is ready for these assessments and shows proficiency in all tested areas. These scores determine what classes your child will take in middle school and also prepare them for middle school EOC Exams. Standardized Testing
