What is PixelDrive? • PixelDrive is a fresh new project based on helping people learn to drive or drive in a • safer way. • It uses a specialised form of illustration called Pixel Art. • Being based online, it is accessible anywhere with an internet connection. • It is free. • It requires no specific installation of software or setup of the users computer. • It can help make the roads safer. • It shows with clear and concise diagrams how to perform various tasks on the • road, without any assumption. Basis of Project • The basis of PixelDrive is for my final year project in University. This will act as my • dissertation of sorts. • I chose a driving reference site as it is one subject I am very interested in and effects • the vast majority of people on a daily basis. • Illustration is an area I would like to develop my knowledge of. I chose pixel art as a • medium to do this as I feel it would challenge me and still allow a high quality end result. • During research I conducted a survey. One question I asked was whether people • thought an interactive version of the Highway Code would be useful. 45 people out of • 45 answered yes. Neil Magill | Pixel Drive Presentation
Existing Solutions • There are quite a few Existing Solutions that exist for showing people how to drive. • The majority only cover learner drivers, rather than act as a reference for all drivers. • The quality of these packages that are available is very poor, this covers both CD and • web based solutions. • Another question I asked during research was whether people found there to be a lack • of driving information online. Out of 45, 26 people (57%) had answered yes. I would • however suggest that not all respondents had looked up information about driving online. Neil Magill | Pixel Drive Presentation
Why PixelArt? • I chose Pixel Art as a method of illustration for several reasons: • A unique concept for driving illustrations. • A simplified method of illustration, makes simple but detailed explanatory scenes. • The isometric style is very suited to illustrating roads, junctions etc. • It adds to a modern, fresh, informal and simple look used for the site. • Illustration is an area in which I need more experience in. The Future of PixelDrive • Continuation of the sites main purpose • Further explanation of less popular manoeuvres / driving situations • Keeping up-to-date with legislation changes Neil Magill | Pixel Drive Presentation
Conclusion • In conclusion I feel PixelDrive is a fresh new concept for an issue that affects most • people each day. • It is something different in comparison to existing bland and formal solutions. Neil Magill | Pixel Drive Presentation
