  2. How it began? • IRISH born anaesthetist • (1888-1986) • Started as GP • Queen's Hospital, Sidcup, in 1919 • plastic surgeon Harold Gillies • World war 1 • Facial injuries • What did he do??

  3. Endotracheal tube • Facial injuries – mask fitting and chloroform administration ?? Possible ?? • Endotracheal tube designed • from a roll of rubber industrial tubing by his assistant, hence the natural curve of the tube • Metal magill connector • MG car brake system – catheter mount

  4. knighthood • Sir Ivan was knighted in 1960 by the Queen for his contribution to advancement of medical science

  5. 90th birth day • His Birthday party was held at the Royal Society of Medicine on the 9th July 1978. This was attended by over 200 members and guests in Barnes Hall It was noted that 11 ex-presidents were in attendance, for some of which this was their first attendance for many years.
