Introduction • Advice on what to eat and what to avoid eating is often given by diet gurus or pharmaceutical companies that have much to gain. • Diet is in the media spotlight more than ever before as Canada’s population grows “heavier!!!” • By the turn of this century, it was estimated that 35% of men and 27% of women in Canada were overweight. • Canadians spends over $2billion, or 2.5% of the health care budget, on treating obesity and diseases related to obesity. Dieting • During the past 30 years, society has promoted thinner ideal body types for women. • Even if their weight is in the proper range, women feel pressure from friends, TV- and sometimes parents – to be “very thin”??? • Diets, for the most part, do not work. • 95% of people who diet gain the weight back within two years. • Studies also show that weight is regained more quickly after each dieting phase. • This constant weight fluctuations can be dangerous due to repeated stress on your body. Male Dieting • A slightly different problem exists for many young males. • They may wish to emulate the muscular heroes they see in movies, sports, and advertising. • Most adolescent boys, however, do not have muscular bodies. • Muscle development becomes most accelerated only after height growth has slowed. • In an effort to look larger, men may use protein diets, which are aimed at increasing muscle development by increasing food intake beyond the body’s needs. Steroids • For some people, steroids have become a quick but dangerous way to gain muscle mass. • Negative side effects include: • mood swings, • prematurely halted growth, • testicular shrinkage, • infertility, • brain cancer, and • and premature heart disease West Humber C.I.
Group Activity: Take a Stand WHAT IS HEALTHY? West Humber C.I.
Group Activity: Take a Stand STATEMENT: The media should show bodies of different shapes, not just the stereotypical “ideal” figures. • In groups of four (4): • Define the issue. • Where is the balance between the medical profession’s idea of a healthy body type and the social standards of ideal body types as reflected by the diet food industry and media? • Factors that you think contribute to society’s image of the ideal body • Other weight-reduction options for people whose obesity is dangerous to their health • Other muscle-building options for those who choose this lifestyle • Identify the perspectives of each of the opposing positions. • Brainstorm suggestions for a solution.
